Folding Bikes - Travelling with a r20 folder

I'm about to fly overseas. How do you guys travel with your 20's? I had a bag earmarked which i thought was suitable but the 20 actually doesn't fold down that small? is it a question of taking the wheels off as well. I'm thinking of a large army duffle bag at the moment? Any advice?

I don't have a 20, but I recently went to Dallas, Austin and then Kansas with one of those old Italian folders with rack built in. I did it by splitting into 2 suitcases, bought the biggest I could at Sal army for frame, then got an old fashioned foldover suiter and put one wheel in each side. (It worked fine, but cumbersome factor encouraged me to get a newer folder with a suitcase big enough to keep it all there.)

Disassemble the bike, yes take the wheels off, put it in the suitcase, take pictures while packing, zip-tie everything together, print out a sheet with packing instructions in case the TSA decides to unpack the whole thing.

I would not use a bag, as I'd assume the bag will get whomped in transit, and either the bike will get messed up, or something (likely the cranks) will scrape up against / rip / otherwise possibly screw up someone else's luggage.

Has anyone flown through Asia with a folding bike. How did you go with the 20kg max weight for luggage in the hold. Airlines are strict through this sector and getting stricter and with the bike at around 12kg's and the case at around 7kg that's the baggage allowance all used up?
Do people that travel with folding bikes in suitcases only go through the USA (no weight restriction, only luggage size).

Excess baggage is expensive, it runs into the hundreds of dollars for a few kg's. Anyone here experienced this problem?

The 29 oyster is tight. There's a new flite shape (77cm) suitcase which is deeper, hence no need to remove QR axle. I figure if you're travelling you need more in a bag than a bike, so a bigger case is better.
This is for a r20. English cycleways...unbelievable!!!
