Howdy,

Here's another ride proposal for the weekend of Jun 23rd/24th. What do you think of this one??? You guys decide the day. I can do either Saturday or Sunday. I only suggest an early start. We need to beat the high afternoon winds and high altitude storm potential. Electrical storms on a sunny day at 14,000 feet are terrifying.

The logistics are pretty self explanatory. We'll meet at the ranger station on the south side of I-70 on hwy 103. From there we ride UP towards Echo Lake. Those that are game can continue on to Mt. Evans. There's a bike fee to access the summit road past Echo Lake. I think it's still $5 bones. From the top we rocket back DOWN to Idaho Springs and meet at Two Brothers Deli for a sammich and then off to Tommy Knockers Brewery for a brew.

This is a legendary ride that is most notable as the Bob Cook Memorial Mt. Evans Hill Climb competition. Cyclists come from all over the country - and world - to compete for the title. We'll probably take upwards of 4 hours to ascend and descend this 14,000 + foot monster.

For all of you TBP riders ...this is an excellent primer for altitude and climbing. If you can knock off this beast, then you can ride confidently from Idaho Springs to the summit of Loveland Pass on July 14th.

Discuss...

I can't make it, sounds great though. I did some of that (not Mt. Evans) as part of a loop out of Golden last weekend. It was awesome.

Count me in as a possible. I would lean more towards that saturday but sunday may work as well.

I'm in for Sunday. Saturday I have a 3yr old's (not mine!) recital and then an engagement party (not mine!) to attend. I'll be ready for multiple hours of self-inflicted pain come Sunday for sure--

I am changing my vote to Saturday. My wife is off and with one car and a kid that makes things a tad easier. Plus, I owe Pwnt lunch for transporting me to elephant rock.

Hi guys,

The honey do fairy has landed this weekend. I have been promising to finish two projects around the house and this will be the weekend for it. My apologies.

But, don't let this mean that YOU can't ride Mt. Evan. Knock it out and come back here to tell us your fish stories.

telenick, I'm glad that I read this even though I can't make the ride this weekend, but I will be out there in the area for the week leading up to the triple bypass...I have a group of people coming with me and we'll be there from the 7th thru the 15th of july, as for now I've scheduled us to ride that ride you're talking about here on thursday the 12th of July. Last year when we did this, the fee was 3 dollars, so it must have gone up to 5, so that's good to know for planning purposes...

I don't know what your riding schedule is, but if you'd like to ride with us, let me know, you can respond here or by PM, we'll be based out of golden pretty much.

Looking forward to it,

take care, and I hope this ride went well for all of you.

Good to know caadman. I'll keep you on my radar. Perhaps you might like to venture further west for a ride? I'm technically free and clear since I have successfully fullfilled my honey dew obligations.

I think you can ride the road for free but if you stop to use the facilities at the top you have to have the sticker/permit/whatever, thats the way its supposed to work for cars anyhow.

And this post is as close to climbing Mt. Evans as I expect I will get.

Hmm that's different bvfrompc, the lady at the booth in echo lake said that we had to have it to get by her place, so we got it, so I just assumed that you needed it this year also, it's not that much, so we'll probably just get it, but maybe not, my Mom drive sag wagon for us and we normally send her ahead to get the tickets, so maybe they won't make us get them, we'll see..Thanks for that info though.

telenick, that'd be fine if you could join us, but how far west are you talking about going?? I do know that one of the day's we're scheduled to ride from idaho springs to the top of Loveland pass and back and another day from idaho springs to the top of berthoud pass, is that west enough??.....We do have a van and a trailer with drivers, so we could drive someplace also..

Let me know,

thanks,
Benjamin

Thats what the linked story refers to, the booth folks were bullying folks into paying when they really didn't have to. Big scandal

Ahh gotcha now, I didn't read the attached link the first time, so that's why my response was the way it was. Now I've read the article and it makes sense...So that's good to know for the sag wagon that drives for us up it also, we just ride to the top and come back down, so she (sag driver) shouldn't have to pay either, good info to know.

Thanks much bvfrompc
