Took my wife's Rans Stratus XL LWB recumbent out for a few miles last night to see how fast I could adjust to it.
All I can say is WOW! It's like riding on a cloud once the corners don't scare the bejeebers out of you.
So, once my son gets to riding his own bike instead of a 3rd wheel on mine, I think it's time for me to get 'bent.
Any other clydes out there riding LWD recumbents? I am 6'5" and 360 now. Well over the capacity of the rans, but It feels solid.
Any Suggestions on upgrades? Anyone running wider tireson the rear? The stock ones looked like 28mm to me. (I live on about 1/8 mile of gravel and I plan to commute.)

I was very close to pulling the trigger on a lwb, but I could not figure out where to store it at work. I also plan on riding in rain so that was another mark against it. Finally, I can't grow a beard. As I understand it all male bent riders must have a long beard.

Cool, I have a head start for when I eventually switch to a bent!:p

Are normal cyclists allowed beards? 'Cause I am definately working on one, haven't shaved in almost a month now, but have no desire to ride a recumbent.

Yes, but all of your fellow upright bikers will think that you are a closet bent rider.

When I grow a beard, it never fills in worth a damn. I think the follicles all migrated to my back.:D

Last time I grew out a beard was in college. Mind you I grew up in a town where just outside town was surrounded by Amish... I came home from college and everyone said my beard looked like an Amishman's beard. I started getting called Amish. I cut it after getting sick of hearing that over and over, but there aren't Amish anywhere nearby now, so that response shouldn't come up. I hope!

I'm a jumbo bent rider, but I'm a SWB guy. I ride a Bachetta Strada; 650c x 23c wheels. I'm 250 and having Lotsa fun. Oh, and I do have a small goatee, more of an extended soul patch. No full-on beard, though.

I started a thread on Folding and found the Downtube model would make for a good fit as commuter bike, as well as solve your problem about storage. Check out SesameCrunch's bike, a Folding recumbent build.

How tall are you? I wonder if the Strada would work for me.
With the height and my fat ass, I need a pretty long bike?

6'3, 375#, just bought a RANS v2 this weekend !!
Love it, and still learning how to start without the wobblies.
Sorry, but no beard. I tried a couple of times to grow one, but by the end of the second week it got so itchy, I could not stand it anymore.

With the height and my fat ass, I need a pretty long bike?I'm 6' tall. My bike will accomodate up to 6'6". My son is 6'7" and rides it comfortably. It would accomodate your height, but it has a 275#weight limit. I'm not sure if that is a engineered weight limit, or a liability insurance weight limit. It seems to be pretty prevalant these days to put a weight limit on bikes. As far as I know, there are no SWB bikes of good quality with a higher weight limit.
If I were you.... I'd go for a Tour Easy. http://www.easyracers.com/tour_easy.htm Yes, it's long wheel base, but a nice bike and no weight limit. If money isn't an issue, get the Gold Rush Replica. It's aluminum and a skosh lighter, slightly better components. Either way, they're great bikes a good way for big guys to get bent. I also recommend you spend some time surfing around Benrideronline. http://www.bentrideronline.com/ Lots of knowledge there, but some of the people can be a little snooty. Just a few, though.
