Congrats, Steve. No surprises there, though. You were looking pretty damn strong when we rode this winter.

Congrats indeed, and way to go at Cape Fear. What are your race plans for the rest of the summer? I can't seem to find info on any more races in the area...

No Carolina-area races for me until September. I'm going to a 5-week fat camp in Utah.

BTW, the definitive site for upcoming Carolinas race info can be found here (http://www.ncsccyclingassoc.com/index.cfm).

Great job! Based on your reports here, you will do well in the 3's. Have fun - in my experience the 3s make for much livlier races than the 4s.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I'm a bit intimidated by the notion of racing with the 3s but it will serve as great motivation for me to continue to train hard.

As for Utah, I grew up there (insert joke here). It's a great place to be from (ha ha) and an even better place to visit. My parents still live there and I work remotely anyway so we'll hang out in the cooler weather and I'll try to do the Mt Nebo climb (6000 feet of climbing in 20 miles) once a week along with other high-altitude climbs. My goal is to come back weighing 70kg but we'll see how well that pans out. I still enjoy eating, no matter the altitude.

Damn....drop some weight, win some races, and you'll be in the 2's in no time. Congrats dude!.

I *may* make it to Cat 4 sometime next year at the rate I'm going.

Dont be. You have proven yourself by not only accumulating required upgrade points, you've won several races ... you'll be very competitive right now.

Yep
06-12-07, 11:37 AM
So, you were able to use masters results to upgrade then?

I had to show that the distance and field size met the upgrade criteria (ie. at least 30 Cat4s), but yes.

Congrats. Don't be intimidated. Just learn. Individual 3s aren't generally stronger than the strong Cat 4s (like yourself -- last week). They're just enough smarter to make the race more challenging. It's like better drivers in all the same cars :)

The guys racking up the points to be 2s are pretty tough though...

Have fun in Utah. I lived in Salt Lake City for three years, and would probably move back. The mountain access is SO much better than Denver. From my downtown office, on a lunch ride, I could be on steep and technical single track in 12 minutes -- and that trail went straight into the mountains above the capital.

Plus... Moab is 5 hrs away... I'd probably go back towards my MTB side a bit if I ever moved back to Utah.

Whichever is easier ;)

I'll have to ask some guys on my team, but I'm assuming the 3s will be somewhat easier than the Masters--at least around here. There are some freakishly fast old dudes in the Carolinas.

Now see what you've done to me Noah!!? You've made me start freaking out about having to race against guys that are going to eat my freaking lunch. Perhaps upgrading to a 3 after only 2 months was a bad idea. Pardon me while I go hop on the trainer and try to kill myself.

Welcome to the Jungle! :D

The best 3's are stronger than the best 4's, but overall its not a ginormous jump physically. Like waterrockets said- Be prepared for a quick education when it comes to tactics, though.

Leduc, Brown, Harkey, Applegate, Hinson, Baxter, (I could go on and on), a friggin cake walk.

It cracks me the hell up that Leduc (age 55) won the Elite 1/2 North Carolina State Criterium Championship but did not finish in the top 20 in the Masters race held earlier in the day.

Hahahaha, Noah- I like the notion of Leduc being slow :) If he's slow, then I'm going backwards.

Steve, congrats on moving up. Come and race with me and the FSC boys when you get back. We'll have a lot of fun.
