Mountain Biking - Chain Clinking?

HEy, I hav a specialized Hardrock comp and i just started jumping with the bike and i noticed that when the back tire hits the ground the chain kinda clinks around and it is noticibly loud. Is this normal or can i get somthing tightend?

Most likely it's your dérailleur cage bouncing up and down, it's normal.

It's most likely the rear derailleur. It's going to make noise if you are jumping it. As long as it is set up properly for normal riding, their isn't much in the way of adjustement that you could do to quiet it for jumping. Did you think about adding a Lizard Skins protector to the chainstay to keep that from getting all dug up? It would also quiet any chain slap you may be having.

Yep, it's just your chain slapping the chainstay, might even be your derailleur hitting. A lizard skin helps, I've got a thermo-plastic one from THE on mine. I've seen some people just get some foam and wrap it with zip ties or electrical tape. Really just anything to protect it.

I personally use chainslayer cover on the chainstay when just riding, but since none of my bikes are scratch free, I usually don't bother with it. Another thing I've been using is pipe insulator tubes, you know, the foam tubes, slit it and putdouble sided tape on the inside, then put the tube after triming it to size on the chainstay on your bike. It's kind of like what a2p said, but it looks cleaner.

Most bike shops carry them, or can order them for you. There are many generics available as well. It's simply a piece of neoprene (wetsuit material) with velcro. Check on-line as well. I'm sure most everyone carries them.

hey i found the brand called lizard skins on a website but there are four sizes does anyone know what size would fit a hardrock comp?

I think I got a large or jumbo or something when I picked up mine a while ago. I ride an aluminum framed MTB with normal shaped chainstays. If you go the Lizard Skins site, they might have a size chart or something. If you can find one at your LBS, the packages have an explanation on the back as to what size you will need.

if length then you can buy the biggest one and just cut it down to length.

I believe you want the standard size. The neoprene has some elasticity to it, so it'll stretch a bit.

Better to be too small than too big!

It is in fact the standard one you want. And you will have to cut a hole in the lizard skin so that it goes around your cable.

i had an old shin pad made from neoprean that i cut up and zipped tied on.
you could also use a piece of an old tire or tube.

or i've seen people use a rubber hose as well.
