Sunday August 19th in lancaster PA... who's there?

http://www.lancasterbikeclub.org/cbm.php (http://www.lancasterbikeclub.org/cbm.php)

There are already a couple of threads up on BF, but it'd be cool if we can get a clyde group there.

I'd love to... I could visit family too, they live not too far from Lancaster. However I'm not sure what my schedule will be like come August. Would be fun though! Alas, too bad.

I just registered for the event. The other Neil said he'd be interested as well. Who else? If you're not sure, just go and register anyway. If no clydes show up, I'll be outnumbered by skinny foosters.

I'll be there and likely still be classified as a clyde then. Little Darwin rode it last year and I'm pretty sure he's planning on doing it again.

I'll be there for my second year. Last year rode only 15 miles, solo. Did get plenty of ice cream. Will go for the 31 mile route this year. Be happy to start out with the BF group, don't know how long I stay with most of you, but there are so many riders in this event you are never alone.

Mapquest says 130-140mi from Alexandria. Hmm, really thinking about this ride. :D

Already registered and have reservations at the Holiday Inn so I can ride the BF social ride on Saturday too, if we do it.

I can't let that happen. We need to show Neil solidarity. And as the photo of me with my new bike shows, I look very solid. :-)

I have friends in the Lancaster areas so for those that have never been there, it is some beautiful country. Flat rolling hills mainly until you go a little east towards Gettysburgh where the mountains begin (that area, plus the Cumberland/Shenandoah is, imho, some of the most beautiful around). Just watch out for the Amish (and the ubiquitous, I mean, unique, odor of Lancaster).

One other thing, I've found that Lancaster and its surroundings has particularly good little restaraunts. :)

I doubt the wife and I will be in shape enough to do the ride on our non-road bikes by the end of summer. Maybe next year though. ;)

How much climbing is there typically in these? My girlfriend's family is in nearby Pottstown, and the hills around there are pretty nasty in places. I don't know that I could hack 62 miles in that area, but I've heard Lancaster is a good bit more "rolling" as opposed to "miserable".

yeah, me too. Looking to see whether we will try to do it as a family thing. If not, I'm thinking I might just leave the house at 530 and make a day of it. Let me know if you're interested in joining for a day trip and we'll see if we can work it out.

Um, I don't know so much about that. My Fiancée lives near Gap Pa, which is right in the greater Lancaster/Amish tourist trap. Needless to say, I'm in the area at least once a week and we get to sample the cuisine quite often. I personally have found that if you want anything with any type of taste at all, avoid anything Amish themed. Their gimmick is a simple and plain life, and it shows in their cooking. Tasteless, and especially make sure you don't buy an Amish made Shoofly pie, you'll regret it. Personally the only Amish themed restaurant I care enough to recommend would be Good-n-Plenty, it's a pass the bowl family type place that has delicious pickled beets. The beets are really sticking out in my mind for some reason...possibly the flavor of the vinegar. Anyways, its on rt 896. If your coming down Rt. 30 (the main drag through Lancaster, 896 intersects at the red-light right after the Rockvale shopping center. Turn on the side of the WaWa (so it don't matter if your east or west bound) and follow that road about a half mile, it’s on the left. Avoid Millers Smorgasbord, the food is ridiculously overpriced, go to Shady Maple instead.

And make sure if you find yourself in the Intercourse/Bird in Hand area, hop on rt 340 (I think that’s the Old Philadelphia Pike) and stop by Kitchen Kettle.

Can't say I've ever been to an amish themed place near Lancaster. Don't particularly have a desire to do so.
I may be strange in that I like English food (or maybe just the English Pub atmosphere?), but there's a place called Quipps in/near Lancaster that has good beer and decent English fare.

There also a decent place near Mt. Joy, I think it's called Boobs, that has good beer and good food.
Been to several other places that have been good.

How do the different routes work? Do the 15mi and 31mi routes just end before the 62mi route does or are they completely different paths? I'm wondering because I can probably ride 31mi, haven't ridden that far yet at once but should be able to, but I'm not sure about being ready for 62mi by then. However if I hit mile 31 and was still feeling really good it would be interesting to try pushing on to 62.

Crossposted (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=298962)from NE regional forum:

The train is looking like less and less of a possibility. Just floating an idea, here... do we have enough people going in from NJ that it would be worth our while for four or five people to chip in and rent a van?

NJ Transit is pretty good about bringing bikes on board. We could all meet up near a train station (MetroPark is centrally located and a major stop, but I'm open to ideas).

Rent-a wreck is asking $60/day for a cargo van. If we could get 4-5 people going in on this, with gas and tolls this wouldn't be much more than train tickets (particularly Amrtak), and far more reliable

Not sure about the 15, but I'm pretty sure the 31 goes along with the 62 for a while. I seem to remember they had different road markings where they split from each other. In order to make it a loop back to the start, they have to split off in differnet directions at some point. The good news is if you finish the first 31 and still feel good, you could always ride the loop again. Just make sure you eat something good at the halfway point.

My wife and I are in (having finally found a hotel). She's not a Clyde/Athena so I'll try and convince her she needs to carry the extra weight in a backpack to make it a level playing field. First big event ride for both of us so looking forward to it. Can probably make the Saturday BF social ride too if that happens. See you there!

So I guess there'll be sombody there with a B/F sign? I plan on being in the parking lot ready to ride by 7:30. The wife and I are staying at the Best Western Eden Resort Inn & Suites
which is about 4 miles from the starting lot.....anyone else staying there that I can bike in along with?
