Road Cycling - need bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm not an experienced biker, but I'm looking around to see what there is. What would you recommend for a good, quality bike just to get me around campus that hopefully isn't too expensive?

Do you have a preferred style of bike? What kind of budget do you have to work with? :)

One question you must ask yourself is; are you sure that you just want to ride around campus? I purchased a good low end road bike (Lemond Nevada City for $500) thinking I was just going to do some minor riding, but in three months I've gone 1500 miles. I road it so hard in such a short time (even did a century) that I've had to take it to the LBS several times for upgrades and repairs. I wished I had purchased a higher end bike the first time.

One company who do a couple of great bikes at the budget end of the scale are Fuji
http://www.fujibikes.com/road/
They do most styles of bike, from road bikes, touring, flat bar sports bike, to MTBs.
For utility/commuting use, make sure you can fit a luggage rack and fenders, and have room for the widest tyers you will need. If riding in winter, then medium width, such as 32mm for road(700c size) wheels or 1.5" for MTBs is a useful option.
If theft is a problem, then a used bike is a safer option. Old road and touring bikes can ride well, and are less stealable than a fancy looking new model.

Another nod for the Fuji line of bikes. Lately I've been riding a Fuji Ace that I recently built up for my daughter and I have really enjoyed riding the bike. It's very smooth on the road.
Another idea - check the local pawn shops and Goodwill stores. You might find something cheap there you could start out with to make sure you're going to like riding a bike.
