what would be a good price for this thing?
one of my LBS offered 725 dollars for it, and free tuneups/repairs and honors all warnties for the life of the bike.
is that a decent price? should i go lower? i'm happy paying that, but i dont know if its a complete ripoff or not.

if its te hardtail model than i would say total ripoff, if its the FSR model i would say slight ripoff.

total ripoff eh?
they say the list price was 999 dollars, its comprable to the 800ish Rockhopper Comp they specialized sells this year, except has some better components...
its never been ridden...
really a total ripoff eh?
hmm i'll have to talk to them

and yah, its hardtail
Thats a complete rip off. The 03 model sells for $530! Buy that and spend the difference on upgrades.

okay there is definitly some confusion here.
i'm talking about the 2001 ROCKHOPPER PRO
not HARDROCK PRO.
heres whats on the Rockhopper Pro
its noticable differences are Deore XT derailers, and a Judy XC fork, and Shimano M515 SPD pedals.
the Hardrock Pro sells for 530 dollars. The BASE MODEL of the ROCKHOPPER sells for something like 550. the Pro is comprable to the COMP version of the ROCKHOPPER sold today, which goes for 800ish dollars, and has some lower end componennts.
get it?

the rockhopper has terrible shocks. the judys. I really dont like them. let me give you some other reccomendations
kona cinder cone(800. with great fork and components) hehe my bike
kona nunu(700 basically the same execept spring rather than air)
Specialized p2(720 great stuff for freeride)
Haro escape 8.1 0r 8.2( 8.1=600 8.2=800)
look into those they seem like better set ups

725 for a two year old bike that is used and has a newer model only selling for 125$ more. Yep thats a rip. I would pay more the 50% for it. Crap I won't pay more than 65% to 75% for a 2002 brand new...maybe I am just picky about cost.
JasBike
06-30-03, 08:04 PM
but since this bike IS NOT USED, and actually has better components than the current model.. how is that a ripoff?
its in absolute mint condition, been in the back of the store for 2 years
JasBike
06-30-03, 08:14 PM
ugh some other people say its a good price because its better than the 800+rockhopper comp.. others are turned off cause its 2 years old..
are bikes like computers?!?
damn this is frustrating
i want that bike so bad >=(
how should i talk down the price?

Sorry it just doesn't seem worth it to me but thats your decision. If the bike fits and you like it then get it :)...

is it just a.. trend thing?
the bikes are freakin' identical except the pro has some BETTER features... why would it be outdated?!

if it has better components on it then get it. I would get them to lower the price some more though, because they obviously want to get rid of it. They've had the damn thing for almost three years now (new models come out the september or october of the previous year, so that 2001 got delivered to them in the fall of 2000.) IMHO they are fleecing you.

oki i'll get the price lowered.

Okay, here's the rub.
I understand you are talking about the rockhopper pro and not the hardrock. i understand the bike is in new condition. I still think $725 is not a very good deal for it because the bike is 2 years old. I dont care what the retail was when it came out, you should compare it to what you can get now. bikes usually tend to be cheaper in the sense you get more for your money as the years pass. If you ever try and sell that puppy you will take a bigger hit because of the age. 2004 rockhoppers are right around the corner, so essentially you are looking at a three year old bike. no one is going to care you bought it this year. to a potential buyer you might as well have had it for two years. however, I dont think the computer analogy holds much water because it is not like the bike is obselete now. it is a fine bike but maybe not the great deal it appears to be. I imagine the components are pretty much the same but the difference my be in the fork. what fork is on it?
If it were my money, I would pony up the extra $100 or so and get this year's rockhopper comp. probably if you wait a few months, the price will be about the same. compare the specs on the pro with the comp and see how they match up. Or if you really like the pro ask yourself why. If you really like the color scheme better on the older model, or the geometry is better for you (assuming the geometry has changed with the new model)than go for it. I dont think you should get it just because you think you are getting a killer deal. If you really want it, you should negotiate on the price more. after all it has been taking up floor space for 2+ years.
also in your price range (~$700) look at the giant rainier. well equipped bike.

Components aren't the point you asked if you were getting ripped off, and you are. The fact that the bike shop is asking 75% of the original price of a nearly 3 year old bike, new or used or whatever, means you are getting ripped off. You asked a question people replied with their opinion. if i were you i'd just save an extra 75 bucks and get a trek 6700. Trust me, you're gonna end up spending it anyways replacing the HORRIBLE saddle if you get the rockhopper

Its simple they are like computers in that they are (even with the same name) consantly evolving. I tend not to want to buy older bikes unless I get a really good deal. You can't compare a two year old bike to a bike now. At least I can't.
Ok, I just reread the thread. Is it the HT version or not? If it is then not a chance. Ht's devalue MUCH faster than duallies and I dont' think this is worth nearly 725 even with the components. Also I doubt very much the rockhopper pro is equal to the comp. If anythng specialized has moved the line downwards meaning the frame it is equal to will be the standard rockhopper. Just because on the scale in THEIR time frames they looked equal the likelihood of that actually being the reality is nil.
Ok that said I will simply say again if you like the bike and you think it is a deal and the bike fits and it is what you want and they are giving you the warranty (yes I know its a runon sentence done to signify my point) then get it. I am not saying it is a bad bike I just don't think it is worth anymore than the standard rockhopper. Heck even the 2001 XT might be different than 2002 LX because those parts slowly get dropped down in categories as the best get improved.
Now do you see my point...

You could compare it to a car...same parts (basically) on both cars...but one of them is older and has NEVER been driven. There's something called "depreciation" and that's like, as time goes on, the car gets less and less value. Like say if u get in an accident, insurance doesn't pay u the FULL COST of the old car u just bought, they pay the "dropped" price that they think it is from the yr the car was made in. I don't know if this helps much .. lol ...
go to a different shop i never seen a rockhopper go for that much, especially a 2-year old model. for $700 you could get a decent new hardtail.

its down to 600.

You can get more off of that price, or I'd just wait a few months.
For $725, you might be able to get a 2003 Rainer in about a month or so.

i'm not waiting a few months and i dont need more. this bike is ifne
whats a rainer?

You're in a rush, being in a rush and buying a bike at the same time is a bad thing. If you're that interested in that 01 RockHopper, talk to the people that work at the shop, see if they will offer free maitenance, see what the warranty is on it, Test ride it and see if it fits you. Seriously though, I'm a Giant person, but I do have a liking for specialized as well, you can get a much better bike that has better or equal components new for a $ more or at the same price. Rushing something like this is a bad thing, how will you know you'll like the bike in the long run, how will you know if it fits you correctly. If you rush it, you will not get a true feel for the bike, let the shop do their job and don't rush them.

okay. i'm really tired and my stomachs killing me. i dont mean to be rude if this comes out like that.
but.. i already stated above:
lifetime repairs + tuneups free, warrentees are lifetime.
i test rode the bike. i liked that fit more than anything else i'ved tried.
i have been shopping for a bike for a good 2 months now. but now i need it.
the shop offers a 30 day period, if i dont like the bike, i return it for the full value i paid.
i didnt spend one day shopping. i just need the bike now because i've spent much time already looking at them. and personally i dont think i can get a better bike at the 600 dollar price point.
and components aside, none in that price range felt as good as this.

Try to get them down to $550. $600 is still a little bit too high.

Why dont you just buy the bike. Here is what I have to say: The bikeshop got that bike for around 700 bucks (their cost) at 600 its a pretty good deal. They wouldent really like to lose money on a bike, but if you could talk them down the day you plan on getting it then try, otherwise just buy it.

i plan to
600 is a tad bit high but decent. go for it and enjoy the bike!
