Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - anyone sport carbon rims on their fixie/ss?

Wondering if anybody has thrown on a spare pair of carbon rims on their fixie/ss? Notice any difference in the ride?

I know it's kind of contradictory considering most fixies are urban survivalist type bikes and a carbon rim isn't going to last flying through pot-holes, but just wondering if anybody has been crazy enough (rich enough) to try it.

people run hed3 carbon wheels all the time. er at least they used to. i haven't seen any in a while. maybe they all shattered into a million pieces simultaneously

i would but i just can't decide which of my many spare carbon rims i want to use.

The earlier versions of these wheels were returned with a lawsuit.

I have an old Specialized Tri-Spoke that I use sometimes for time trials. They are very versatile wheels which can be used on the front (slight modification) and rear as a track wheel or you can spin a freewheel on it.

I have a HED carbon disc rear wheel that I've ridden a couple times. Sounds different. A little stiffer.

I've seen people riding HED trispokes and Aerospokes front, rear, and full set in Philly.

So the trickle down theory has only reached the HEDs huh? I guess it'll be another 10 years before we see Zipps or Reynolds.

Yeah cost is probably a factor at least for street use. You can get those old tri-spokes for 100-150 bucks but they are not every day wheels and really suck in a cross wind.

Although I'm pretty sure the first is used for the track, the second is Don Walker's display bike... but the third probably makes it into the streets.

I want to ride Zipp's in the street just once to see how they are. Would they soak up all the vibrations and be ridiculously fast? Or would they crack the first time I hop a curb?

I put my zipp front on once.. but dont have a track carbon rear wheel..

carbon tubulars would rock on the street if you had the $$$.. as soon as the new track opens up here I'll probably get a set and hit the street with them from time to time.

carbon wheels dont really soak up much vibration like a carbon frame does (i dont think, too many variables for me to tell) but they are pretty redonkulusly fast/light and suprisingly durable.

A certain well-known messenger around my city rocks a disk wheel on the street from time to time, but he's also a track racer and therefore puts it to good (practical) use as well. I'm not sure if it's carbon though.

i love listening to that sound, out at the track or occasionally in central park.

Ditto to that. I love that sound. whomp whomp whomp whomp.

I'd probably go with a pair of Reynolds carbon wheels if I were to actually do some track racing.
