I thought about taking one of those 8 days/8 nights cycling tours where you're with a bunch of strangers for about $3000.00, but I just can't.:o
I'm kind a lone wolf anyway when it comes to riding, so I don't mind. Besides, I imagine that there are always riders scaling the storied climb.
Any suggestions from experience?:)

I've never been there, but I would definitely camp if I was going to be there. I've heard that the crazy cycling fans party on the side of the mountain all night anyway.

there is a great campground in bourg d'oisans-a couple of them, actually. i didn't see as many hotels, though, as i saw at the Top of alpe d'huez...good luck!
Are you going just to ride the Alpe or to see the TDF?
If just touring then ,campsites will not be full
At the start of the climb is Camping de la Piscine , 10 or 12 euros
If to see the TDF ( do they go up the Alpe this year?) then camp on the hill, it's a blast, find the corner that is orange, it's the dutch and you will have a great night.
Have fun.

( do they go up the Alpe this year?)
No. Closest they get is Col de Lauteret.
