Mountain Biking - Kickstand animosity

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I've recently been seeing alot of animosity towards kickstands which I find pretty damn funny.
So what's the deal with the pure disdain for them?
Is it a weight issue or pure asthetics?
I have to admit that I haven't taken mine off yet from my 2001 Specialized Expedition Sport. I've had the bike for alittle over a month and I used to use it all the time.
Now I'm starting to get used to leaning it up against stuff.
I will say that the one reason I've noticed for wanting to get rid of it is the fact that it makes a racket when the bike bounces.
So what's the scoop?
If Im correct, isnt the Expedition more of a leisure bike than it is an off road bike? I think people remove the kickstand for several reasons:
1) Weight
2) It gets caught on stuff
3) Appearance (gives a more elite look rather than a novice one)
I took off all my reflectors as well. Im just a rebel arent I :D
Actually, the Expedition is a Hybrid.
I do mostly rode riding but I wanted the option of going off rode. The guy at my LBS suggested this bike.
I'll tell you it kicks butt. It has a Mountain bike frame - A1 Premium Aluminum. The top tube slopes down in case you want to go off rode and don't want to lessen your chances of being able to have kids in the future.
The 2001 that I have is totally different than the '03 model.
I'll post the specs when I get them. I just ordered them from Specialized in Salt Lake City Utah.

One of the dangers of a kickstand is that you will use it to stand your bike up when you leave it outside a shop. You should always leave your bike locked to some large immovable object if there are opertunist bike thieves around
Believe me - I think of security all the time.
I walked into a store yesterday to buy a bottle of water (gone for maybe 3 minutes), and I secured my bike.
Perhaps being paranoid, but just because your paranoid doesn't mean there's not people after you - :)
