I use the center of the lane, and get in line.

If I am still a very long way from the back of the queue, the lane is wide, and the speed differential is high, I might ride on the far right side of the lane to let drivers pass, essentially racing me to queue for the red light, but I think I move into the center of the lane pretty early.

Sometimes after I stop at a stop line I will edge to the left if a driver wants to turn right and there is room for me to let him pass to my right. But if the lane is at all narrow I won't try.

Right... makes perfect sense... So on a 25MPH road, holding your position as centered is the proper approach when you are only a couple car lengths to the stoplight and intending to go straight through.

Now, how to get motorists to buy into that... and stop seeing us as some sort of obstruction that must be overcome at all costs. The stoplight is the biggest delay motorists face and they must come to realize that cyclists belong.

This is a major motivation behind some vehicular cycling advocates' efforts. They hope to educate motorists about vehicular cycling directly through programs such as the driver manual, and indirectly by encouraging cyclists to operate that way more often, habituating motorists to it.

when i ride i have an obligation to, above all else, ensure my own safety as best as possible. in your situation, if i wasn't satisfied with my visibility etc., i'd 1st look for an alternative route with less traffic. if that does not exist, i would position myself in the lane such that it maximized visibility and prevented motorists from taking unnecessary chances.

never would i put myself in a risky position to appease other motorists. the legislators of the state of ohio agree as well.

I suppose direct motorist education is not out of the question then. As far as driver manuals... if only the motorists would read that page and a half out of the 80 pages of the CA handbook... But about page 50 or so, I am fairly sure they are "saturated."

Now if it was actually on the test... ;)

I agree that safety is my first obligation. That's why I ride this route in a way that I feel is the safest.

I'm satisfied with my visibility. I have tried this hill both vehicularly and my own way, and find that my way feels much safer, and get's everyone to their respective destination the quickest. I have no interest in appeasing motorists for its own sake.

Wow. Amazing.

Perhaps cyclists have a chance after all.

Now about all those speeding motorists... ;)
