Southern California - places to live near carson

thinking of moving to la, anywhere nice to live near the velodrome (home depot center) in carson?

I live in Carson. It's OK. If you have kids, I recommend Torrance or Palos Verdes (PV) instead. Resale will be greater regardless b/c the school district is better.

If you're renting, it doesn't really matter. Be advised that North Carson (where the Home Depot Center is situated) is directly across the 91 and borders a certain town called Compton... you may have heard of it. The south bay area has nice pockets, you just have to find them.

I'm sure some other folks from the area would love to chime in.

I grew up in Long Beach. Nice town and not far from Carson.

beach cities if you are single: redondo, hermosa, manhattan (not in any particular order) i live 6 miles from the velodrome and 3 miles from the beach. but, i'm moving into manhattan beach soon.

with family: torrance, palos verdes

This is largely a budget decision. Torrance/PV can be very expensive. I pay $2,400/month rent. Thankfully I split it. I would probably shoot for Long Beach if single and money was a concern. Lots of affordable apts. Carson would be a choice if you're really hardcore into track. You'd be close to the track and you'd have plenty of flat recovery road riding in the immediate area. Traffic could be a b*tch though.

Some of the top local trackies live in Long Beach - Adam Duvendeck, Jennie Reed, Travis Smith.

I have friends who ride at ADT a lot and live in Long Beach, and it's pretty easy for them to get there and back any time of day. Their neighborhood seems pretty decent.

Don't you remember the day we took a wrong turn and we ended up in Compton? The roads there were the nicest I have ever encountered anywhere in southern CA. Plus, the bike lanes were nice and wide. I would ride there more often ;)

I lived in Redondo as a junior, about ten miles from the track. (The old Olympic track, torn down to make way for Roger's ego... er, the ADT track. Haha.) Nice place to live, but expensive.

Later, I lived in Long Beach, which is closer to the track (my place was maybe 2 miles away) and can be much more affordable. The trouble with LB is that you can be in a very nice area and then you cross the street and you're afraid for your life. Or wallet, at least. I've never seen a town where the bad parts are so close to the good parts. It pays to spend some time driving around, preferably with a knowlegable local, to learn the ins and outs of the place before deciding to buy.

Carson? No thanks. I've spent a bunch of post-race evenings in the town, and can honestly say that I never felt in imminent danger, but... No, it isn't Compton, but it can be a pretty good imitation.
