... although I think that subject line will be relevant only to South Africans of a certain vintage.
What I really mean is Cape Town calling.
Snoek is the barracuda-like fish that's become synonymous with this part of the world. When I was growing up in the 1960s the snoek sellers would go around on a horse and cart blowing a horn made out of, I think, a rolled-up cone cut from a paraffin (kerosene) tin. Snoektown Calling was the title of a popular radio programme of that time. Radio? Hey, we only got TV in 1975.
I lived here most of my life, except for a couple of years in Cambridge, Mass.
A holiday in Alsace, France, in 1998 rekindled my interest in riding and about 5 years ago I found out about Paris-Brest-Paris. I completed the qualifying brevets and just this week I registered. My enthusiasm infected some riding buddies, who will be joining me in Paris in August. I believe our total South African contingent numbers a couple of dozen.
My bike interest tends towards classic steel: I use an Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra as my everyday rider and Audax bike, a 1982 Gios Super Record for cruising, and an aluminium/CF 2007 Raleigh RC7000 as my go-fast bike. There's also an elderly Specialised Stumpjumper in there...
I look forward to some stimulating discussion.

Snoektown,

Hoe gaan dit, boet?

I was a jo'burger (well sandton really) for 5 years, didn't do much riding
but spent a large amount of time at Sodies, Aliwal and Moz diving.

There's an Africa section in the regional forums but alas, it gets little
or no attention. Seems that most of the cycling community spends their
time at "The Hub".
Do pop over to Classic & Vintage and be prepared to post about the Gios
definitely a classic.
and while you're at it if you can figure out how to send me real biltong and droewors
I'd appreciate it greatly.

Marty
