Southern California - Last Night...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

In the middle of the night my rear tire decided it had had enough and ended it all. When it exploded, it sounded like a gunshot, and I've never seen my wife jump out of bed so fast! Once I told her it was probably a tire she calmed down somewhat...
It was the rear tire on the bike I too up to Chantry. I'm glad it didn't explode while I was descending, that could have been bad.

John, by the way you've been punishing it with all those hills, of course it's going to commit suicide! :p

I've been wondering when one of them would have had enough. :D

In contrast, my tires look up at me with scorn and go, "Is that all ya got?!"

A police chopper would be circling around mi bario for 45 minutes during the middle of the night if my tire had exploded.

How many miles did you have on it?

I'm not sure about the tube, it was replaced before the Eastern Sierra since I accidentally ripped off the valve with my pump.
The tire itself has 920 miles.

Don't you hate that? I have a cheap pump and was forever ripping off stems until my boss suggested PAM. Now I always spray a little on my prestas and everything is cool. Seems the seal in my head is a bit small, and the PAM won't eat away the rubber.

What causes a tube/tire to explode anyway?
Glad to hear it was just a tire . . . that woulda scared the crap out of me in the middle of the night as well!
yeah..that is pretty wierd...

I'm going to look over the tire pretty closely, but I may end up just replacing it just in case.

Definitely...but the wierd thing is if even there was something embedded...there shouldnt have been enough force to make it pop...unless all the gravitational forces were lined up just right???
Or is was a weak tube that just popped!

Yeah, the funny thing is there wasn't any pressure on the tire, the bike was on a stand and the read wheel was off the ground. Not that the weight of the bike should have caused it to explode, either.
I'll make sure and take it out tonight for a ride, I like to get a little time on a new tire/tube locally before a longer ride.

I've had that happen before. When fixing a flat always check to se that the tire is seated and that the tube isn't poking out before you fully inflate .There could be a sidewall cut in the tire also that lets the tube poke out forming a bubble that will burst.:D

Upon closer inspection the tire blew apart. I probably cut it last night on the ride and it finally gave way.

Is it true that if you toss them in a pond they'll sink like a stone?
Not that I want you to try it, I just heard they can't swim...

Okay, points re-awarded... with bonus for ankle tan line. :)
Speaking of waxing... I tried this product last week because it was on sale and intrigued me:

Despite a few user reports of burning sensation, this was completely sensation-free. And worked very well at removing the hair. However, it did not remove the hair from the root, just from the surface, so it did not last any longer than shaving. Perhaps if I need to leave it on longer? I'll give it one more shot.

I used my wife's Veet a couple times prior to waxing and liked it a lot. :o

You'd think so... :o I tend to use a few different Assos jerseys because I like the position of the security pockets, so they all have the same cut. Most of my night rides I use a greater variety since I don't carry my wallet or keys, but not that they would effect the tan lines.

My tire did the exact same thing while I was driving home from Solvang. I completed the double the night before. My bike was lying on its side in the back of my Prius. Driving northbound on 101, then all of a sudden ... BANG!!! I was fearing my car had a blowout, but it was my rear tire on my bike ... it just blew its top!

The guys at the bikeshop were telling me about a woman who had a tire blowout in her car that startled her so badly she ran into a palm tree! I can see how...

I can see how...I had my bike in my office one day and at 5:00, after sitting in the office all day the tire just blew. Would have scared the crap out of me, but since I used to listen to WaterWorld 6 times a day at my desk, hearing explosions was pretty common in there.
