Skate helmets do provide the same protection, if not more protection, then a bike helmet. The biggest drawback is venting. Skate helemts are designed to be worn for a short period of time (>15 minutes) on a half pipe or skate park. Bike helmets vent better as you ride for hours. You didn't disclose your locale, but if your in the Southeast or Southwest, and plan on riding for long periods, a bike helmet would feel better.

cool, i figured they'd be okay, very thick shell and cushy foam.
i'm actually located in New England, so it does get hot.
i'll look into getting both if the skate helmet is unbearable.
Skate specific helmets do NOT have the same protection that bike helmets do. Bike helmets have a harder density of material in the main body of the helmet than a skate specific. However it is better than not wearing any helmet at all.

would i be much better off getting a real bike helmet?
Getting one that is for what you are doing is advisable. If you are going for that skate look in a helmet there are several manufacturers that make that style. Vigor, Pryme etc are two I can imediately spit out but there are many more.
