Has anyone else seen the new no bicycles allowed signs that have been put up on 9w from Piermont up to the hospital in Nyack, NY. I got word that the cops are going to start rigorously enforcing this. I regularly ride up 9w to make a left onto Tweed Blvd, but now I don't know if I want to risk getting a ticket to do this.
That stretch of 9w is narrow and there is little or no shoulder, but I have never had any problems bicycling there.
What concerns me is that once the government prevents bicyclists from using one road (and they are unchallenged) they are sure to start looking at other roads to limit bicycle use. I know there was a similar issue in California on the coastal highway and I believe bicyclists got together and won their right to use the road.
9w is a us highway. How can the local government restrict bicycles anyway.

Is there a minimum speed limit on that road? Are there traffic lights and intersections?

Before going much further, check your state laws to see if they allow local governments to regulate bicycling. In California, local governments cannot, so we were able to fight an illegal road ban. But you may have a harder time if NY state law allows local governments to enact roadway bans.
How recent is this? As of about a month ago the signs were put up then taken down and someone on the local board mentioned that it the ban was rescinded. I rode through there a couple weeks ago with no problems. I saw some faded writing on the shoulder but no signs.

Did they make any sort of alternate arrangements to facilitate cycling on alternate routes?

It was 2 to 3 weeks ago that I saw the signs. Not sure of the exact date. And then I heard from other cyclists who live in Rockland County that they were told that the police were going to start enforcing the ban.
I hope the information you got is correct, that the order was rescinded. I will probably get back up there this coming weekend.

Anyone who travels that way, please keep us posted on this thread. I haven't rode up 9W yet, but I've been planning a tour for later this summer and that stretch is part of my route.

Good news. I went up there yesterday and the signs were indeed taken down.
I'd like to know what transpired to get them to take the signs down. Did someone threaten a lawsuit? Or were they concerned that more cyclists would be diverted to bicycle down main st. in piermont which is already overrun with cyclists as far as many of the town residents are concerned?
