View Full Version : My IRO Jamie Roy Build-Up

First, much thanks for answering a bunch of odd-ball questions from me recently! I knew I wanted to build up something to use for urban riding on paved streets and trails, hopping sidewalks, crossing parking lots and grassy shortcuts and maybe the occasional hard packed trail. Relaxed geometry and straight bars in contrast to the drops on my Riv.
After much deliberation and back and forth between frame styles, vintage vs. new, this frame vs that frame, etc... i finally decided on a white Jamie Roy from IRO. I picked up a 56mm on ebay, a 2006 with the yellow head badge. I'm a sucker for old school badges. So now I'd like to use this thread to show my build-up progress and get a bunch more advice along the way. I'll also continually add updated pics to this first post as the thread moves along.

Now... what to add to the frame first..... I'm thinking a new fork. I really want a carbon fork with disc brake tabs. So first question of my big adventure would be WHICH FORK? Suggestions?

And meanwhile, I know I want to get a phil wood bb (after having one on my Riv I won't get anything else) but not sure how to figure out which one i need. How do i know what to get?

Thanks!! :)

Here's the "before" pic from ebay...

in terms of a fork, something mid priced, or even on the lower end(still rather expensive). it will be heavier but if this is just for kicking around town, i would hate to have something delicate.

I would probably go cheap-ish like a Vicious Cycles disc fork or Kona Project 2 disc fork.

It definitely has to be black, and I was thinking carbon for weight and overall shape but not dead set on it.
To me, me the kona and vicious don't seem much better than the stock IRO fork other than being disc brake compatible. But I would like to keep the cost sub $200 so maybe I'll have to stick to steel.

Hey

I have the same sort of setup on mine (http://velospace.org/node/2046).

The fork is an Airborne Aileron, which is also available under the Flyte brand although I don't know the model. I got it on the ebay; it was under $200 but I don't remember the exact price I paid, I think around $130? anyway these things are fairly uncommon and a low-demand item, so the amount you pay on ebay will vary quite a bit depending on how many people are looking at the time.

good luck with your build

Yairi, nice looking bike! I ended up finding a nashbar branded fork that should work.

WOOT! The first piece just arrived... my IRO frame! :D
The dunnies are for scale. ;)

That's going to be an awesome build. yairi's is tits, too.

Also, way to be into VWs. Further evidence that there's a correlation between FG and VW.

Yup. 68mm

So i just installed the crank (sugino RD) and 42t front chain ring. The teath on the chain ring miss the rear stay by a hair! Any bigger of a chain ring and it would probably hit the stay. But the spec on that crank says I need to use a 103mm bb which is what i installed. Is this right or do i need to get a longer bb?

Ok cool. I've never paid attention much to these kinds of details on a single/fix before so seeing that kinda freaked me out.
Thanks!

I orginally had a 40 and when I switched to 44 I freaked for a moment but I realized that that clearence really doesnt make any difference, meaning there will (in theory) never be anything going through that gap anyway

what about the chain?

d2create
06-22-07, 11:03 PM
DOH! I also just noticed that I can put the chain ring on the OUTSIDE of the crank rather than the inside.
I'm a 'tard.

Hopetoditchcar, the chain travels several inches ABOVE the stay.

If that is BEFORE tightening the cranks bolts (and thereby pushing the crank arm onto the spindle), you're probably screwed. I'm hoping that you just tightened the bolts and then backed them out again. The same thing happened to me when I tried to put sugino 75 cranks on my jamie roy. I ended up getting the IRO cranks because they were cheap and I knew they would work. Currently my favorite bike:

Here's a progress pic.

Nashbar carbon fork with Avid Juicy 5 disc brake caliper installed. Cheap aheadset headset and a temporary adjustable stem until i know what length and angle i need. And of course the Sugino RD crank and messenger chain ring. Now I'm kinda stuck until my wheels come in and I have more money to buy the handlebar, seatpost, and saddle. :(

Ah yes, SSFG, where we will fail to point out that you've mounted your ring on the inside of your crank spider. Way to go, guys. I'm glad you got that figured out though!

Nice bike by the way. You'll be cruising through the woods and dropping curbs in no time.

Thanks! IRO states on their website that the 56" frame weighs 4.2lbs. I'm just not sure if that is with the included fork or not, which i didn't use. So I'm not really sure? But I plan on weighing the entire bike once done just to satisfy my own curiousity.

Well, that depends on the chainline :p One can assume it has to be 42mm on the outter ring with that 103mm BB

I've been thinking about a Jamie Roy to replace my current commuter. Do you know how fat a tire you can fit with full fenders?

DOH! I also just noticed that I can put the chain ring on the OUTSIDE of the crank rather than the inside.

Hopetoditchcar, the chain travels several inches ABOVE the stay.

Or you can a get a ENO two speed freewheel (16-18T) and use two chainrings (maybe a 40 & 42T) up front, for two gear ratios and the same position in the dropout!!! This is my plan and will result in a 60 and 70 inch gear. If you have a flip flop hub your fixed cog can go on the opposite for a fairly versatile and reliable machine. Kinda destroys the concept a little bit but if your rides have variable routes, headwinds or you are tired, its nice to have the option. :D

The stem is an inexpensive adjustable stem made by Uno and it says "free angle" on it.
Once i decide on an angle I'll get regular stem.

Azteca! A friend of mine is bringing me back a few more blind boxes from Austin this weekend. :D

Tire size i'm not positive about but a quick measurement looks like you *might* be able to go as wide as 1.5" on a 700c wheel. I plan on putting on some 37mm tires which is just under 1.5". It's gonna be tight. If I have to I'll go down to a 35 or 32 in the rear. The front all depends on what fork you use. The fork i got is wide enough to hold a huge mountain bike tire.

DAMN this bike build up stuff is expen$ive!

My deep v wheelset ships out next week. Peter White had a heck of time finding a black hub for the rear wheel with disc mounts in 130mm. Had to use 135 and hope I can wedge it in there. Freakin wheels cost almost twice as much as the frame and I didn't even get phil hubs!

Meanwhile it's payday today so I ordered my On-One Fleegle handlebars, a cheap seatpost and a black Brooks B.17. Next week I should be back in bizness!

Hopetoditchcar

I hope you can respace to 130mm, because you should not stretch an aluminium frame.

Yeah.... it's like an eighth of an inch.
How do you "respace"?

Take out spacers and/or use thinner lock nuts

Why not just space a standard track/flip flop hub to 130mm? It seems like a 135mm hub might screw up your chainline and your frame, and this frame doesn't even have disc tabs. Am I missing something?

d2create
06-30-07, 07:40 PM
Yeah, maybe I'll just do the regular hub rather than disc.
I was originally thinking of getting the disc hub so I'd have it for the future in case I got a better frame at some point, but I forgot I'd have to get a frame with the same dropout measurement.

What about regular rear caliper brakes on a non-machined rim? Since I have the disc brake up front, would I have enough stopping power in the rear?
Right now I only have the front brake.

A disc up front should be plenty if you only plan on using the bike fixed. For singlespeed, two brakes. Get machined rims if you're going to run a caliper in back. I'd go Surly hubs since they are cheap, decent, give you enough axle to respace the rear, and offer a bolt-on, matching disc front.

okie dokie, here's a couple more pics.
Sorry they are not that clear with all the other junk in the background.

Got my Fleegle bars from On-One and my white Oury grips. Also a cheapie seat post and black Brooks B.17 saddle and power grips on some cheap pedals.

At first I was stoked to find a frame that still had the old skool head tube badge but now I think I'm gonna remove it.

Just waiting on the wheels now...
