Any other BF members plan on attending the VeloCity conference in Paris in late September?

The VeloCity conference is an international cycling conference, the 14th session of which is to be held in Paris on 23-26 September 2003.

It is held, I think, every two years. The theme this year is "The Bicycle. An Essential Tool for Winning the City Back". It has been held in various cities in the past, including Adelaide and Perth (Australia).

It will involve a lot of practitioners in the delivery of cycling infrastructure and facilities. It also encourages ordinary cyclists and advocates who are members of bike organisations to attend as delegates through a large discount on registration fees.

The website portal address is

For those like me, fortunate enough to be directly employed in a local government-based organisation promoting and/or providing cycling infrastructure and services, the conference will be useful in networking and seeing how other countries deliver, what issues they have, and what solutions they come up with.

Of particular interest for me will be seeing how the London congestion charging concept is working, and comparing it with the successes of similar schemes in other European countries. As some BF members know, I am also a great advocate of rider training, and I am keen to see the content and how this is delivered in Europe in particular.

The conference schedule includes tours of Paris to inspect, I think, some of the creative solutions to cycling infrastructure. There are two conference venues -- a hotel, and the Paris City Hall.

I'm taking time between PBP and VeloCity to do a busman's holiday (or should that be bikeman's holiday?) looking at how the British have assembled their off-road touring path network (Lands End to John O'Groats), particularly signage and route information; then flitting across to Sweden to see how cycle-tourism and commuting works there, before coming back through Holland.

Then again, I might just kick back in France on an extended wine-and-cheese tour for four weeks
