i am looking at buying a new mountain bike from a lbs (down to 2 at two different shops)

both are fairly expensive...however i want to upgrade a few components on each of them

while i know everything is negotiable, what is the traditional charge for such a procedure

parts cost only, parts plus some labor??? credit for original parts?

thanks

Depends on what it is and how willing to negotiate the shop is. I know of shops that will swap out forks, shifters...etc.

Usually they'll give you a small credit for the existing part and you pay the difference. Labor charges are pretty much a given for a substantial swap-out, but can be negotiated down a bit.

The manager at the LBS where I used to work was a big softie and would end up swapping out things for no charge if you pushed him just a little bit.

Never hurts to ask.
