Mountain Biking - They want us out of Norris Dam State Park!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I don't know how many of you have experianced the trails at Norris TN but it is a great place to ride. There have been numerous attempts to kick us out but they have failed. We use the trials more than any other groups(hikers, horses) and take better care than most. The attempts to remove us will not stop so I want to do everything I can to fight it.

What are some good steps to start. I have an online petition going now ( http://www.petitiononline.com/Norris03/petition.html ) , but I know there are other more productive ways to show support FOR biking in the park.

Any info would be great.

Not a TN resident, or else I'd have signed the petition.

For gaining support, publicity is important. If there is a local cycling club, I would try to organize a community awareness ride in the park. Focus on caring for the trail in the ride. If you or your friends have a bike to spare, invite some local paper reporters to go on the ride with you. It could be a real eyeopener for them, and they may write a very positive article on the experience. Even if you can't get a group, invite reporters to go with you and your friends on a ride. Point out the health benefits, opportunity to experience nature, and social nature of trail-conscious cycling.

Of course, you know the most important step - lead by example.

Good luck!

We have a lot of crap like that here in Northern Illinois at my favorite place to ride, Rock Cut State Park, they're closing down a lot of the trails. If you don't have a group of bikers, put one together. Get the media involved, try to get some statistics to put together to show people are using it and make comparisons to other areas in the nation where bikers and hikers and equestrians exist on the same path no problem.

It's pathetic what the select few people are trying to do to us. I've only heard a few stories and some hearsay about this situation. Hopefully with the right, strong voices nothing will come out of this. I went to norris schools and lived here my whole life and have enjoyed the watershead for years. I hope one day my kids can enjoy it as I have.

As for ideas how to get this to stop I'm clueless, but I'll just spread the word to all my fello bike riders and hope for the best.
