Foo - Sorry, but......??????????????????????????????

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Have you ever been told "I'm sorry, but..." ?
The more I think of it the more I really don't want to hear about your sorry but, If you want to apologize to someone, then do it and stop with the excuse already.
Other than a play on words it is really annoying. :)

I tried to edit and put in a question mark. I'm sorry, but......:)
I didn't mean to double my post.

Like when I was doing abatement and my boss says "sorry, but you guys are doing double shifts in the 100% humidity, 120 degree containment in the hot sun." And I said "who the hell are you kidding, you aren't sorry".

Exactly.... Why say you are sorry when you really aren't.
The one I hate the most.
I'm sorry I yelled/screamed/threw a fit at you but you made me mad. Sure, lay on the guilt as you apologize. :)

How about it just being synonymous with recognizing a regret to be confrontational in a debating sense?
"I'm sorry (to have to disagree), but..."
Or how about it being used as a sugar-coating to say you think the other person's an idiot?
"I'm sorry (you can't grasp this simple concept), but..."
Or how about just when somebody really does mean it?
Along the same lines as the "sorry, but" is this phrase: "...with that being said... ."
I hear that too often. Just say what you mean in the first place instead of winding up for the strike.

I get what you are saying but are they really saying they are sorry? It is more of a rationalization, well with that being said ( :) ) I have to go shopping.

I'm sorry but, I'm just not looking to date someone right now.
I've heard that.

IMO. people throw around their sorrys far too indiscriminately.
The word sorry should be reserved for when we really mean it. It shouldn't be invoked when you're socially timid ('excuse me' works much better), nor when you're not genuinely remorseful (as in the OP's original bytch: "Sorry but...").
In that case I'd simply admit that I disagree and not pad it with useless sorrys.

I would take a doughnut over an insincere apology any day of the week. :)

I hear that too often. Just say what you mean in the first place instead of winding up for the strike. And there's always the ever-annoying, half-way through a conversation, "Well, if you really want to know the truth..."
If you have to say that, it immediately suggests that all the other things said up to that point have been prevarications. So just spare that little phrase and start with honesty, maybe, how's that?

Ahhh yes. Human interaction often sucks.
I, for one, look forward to the day we can speak telepathically.
It might still suck, but I'll be able to eat pizza while in the heat of the argument.

Yeah.. You know what I hate? Whiny pretentious ppl who complain whenever another person sometimes uses terms like 'sorry' figuratively - rather than in it's literal sense.

Hey Tom, thanks for the edit, and Red House, I have been called whiny in the past. :)
Mostly I like the way it can be used, like in Sorry butt. I don't want to hear about your "sorry butt"
Re-reading this post it seems it could be aimed at someone specific and it most assuradly is NOT. I meant this thread to be an attempt at humor. ;(

I'm sorry to have to inform you that Foo is strictly a Pie Zone. I'm also sorry you haven't yet realized the utter fallacy of adhering to other, lesser confections. :p
