I just bought a used race frame scandium alumimnum. it a has a few small dings and one ding / dent on the downtube that looks like a pedal dinged it but its very shallow but 1 inch long running with the tube . how long do scandium alum frames last? and how bad does a ding need to be that it is a structural risk. i race and i just dont wanna end up with a failing frame. the pro alum frame i ride now has a small ding but its not scandium which seems to be way lighter and way thinner. i wanted one of these a few years back and found one now but just wanna be safe. any help wil be great.

Post some pics of the ding on the downtube.

From your description, it doesn't sound like anything to worry about.

My bike is all dinged up and scratched. Which to me, is fine, since I care less about it when racing.

I wouldn't buy a dinged used frame.
I'm still trying to figure out how a pedal would hit the down tube. If someone told you that, you were lied to.

Yup. The physics involved with a pedal hitting the downtube is crazy. It errs on the side of impossibility (unless the pedal wasn't attached to the bike).

Yeah... It would've had to be someone else's pedal, i.e. the bike was crashed.
What history did the seller give you?

the peal ding was from bikes hanging up by each other.

the guy i bought it from was totally up front about everything. i have never had such a light thin walled frame. i am used to thicker frames. the ding is very small my shop said its nothing.

Ever try to crush a beer can? without a dent? with a dent? Haven't seen your dent, just saying.
Didn't have to be a crash, could have been manhandled while putting on a roof rack or something stupid like that.

meh. Put a cage on there and you'll forget it's there at all;)
Nope, that's one of those failure causing dings. Sure, it might only be 1 or 2mm deep but as soon as you get on that bike BAM! Frame's in two peices, your crying for mommy and Ryanf is laughing at you.

Is it safe? that depends. If its 52-53cm frame, then it is probably going to fail imminently. You should stop riding it immediately, and send it to me to dispose of, pm for address. If its any other size, its good to go.:D

Bottom line is that if you have a trusted mechanic who's seen it in person and feels it's OK to ride and you're comfortable with that decision, then the advice of us yahoos on the intarwebz is sort of irrelevant. ;)
