Foo - Who Killed Rock & Roll?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
The 80's music thread got me to reminiscing. There used to be a lot of great rock bands in the 60's, 70's, 80's and a little in the early ninties, but then something happened. Who killed it? Was it rap/ hip-hop or Nirvana?

you do not listen to the variety of Rock and Roll. It never died. It's doing fine. Just the US media will do all in it's power to not let you hear it. Radio is for selling crap not for entertaining. Just as news is marketed, so is entertainment. The list of awesome artists is huge. The list could go on and on.
A few Jason Kraz, Blues Traveler, Train, Barenaked Ladies, Jack Johnson, Duncan Sheik, Keane, Collective Soul, Howie Day, Cowboy Junkies, Jayhawks, Neil Finn, Dishwalla, Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise, Natalie Merchant. Great talent out there, if they will let you hear it.
wanta hear some good music.
I suggest this link will tell you how it is possible.

Hardly anyone listens to Rock & Roll, it's dead.

Depends on what you would consider rock and roll. I listen to Indie Rock and Nu Metal.
My guess is people wanted to push the envelope and it turned into heavy metal, then everybody realized that it heavy metal sucked. It got to the point (and still is in some parts) where anyone that could scream and play power chords could do metal, leaving a big hole between metal and softcore stuff. Around this time, the rap scene began and somehow filled that hole with a younger crowd.
The things I listen to are a mixture between alternative and metal. It sounds strange, but when you hear a crushing blow on the guitar followed by vocals that have an almost unlimited range, it hits home pretty hard.
When you go to a CD store or browse iTunes, czech out the band Chevelle, especially their new album "Vena Sera". Give Breaking Benjamin a look as well.

Is this what passes for rock?!?!?!?!
I'm going to go kill myself now.

...good times bad times, you know I've had my share, well my woman left home for a brown-eyed man, but I still don't seem to care
Ahhh, much better :)
There is definitely some rock to be had, although it's pretty slim pickings. Honkin' On Bobo by Aerosmith is a fairly recent album that I would consider rock, but apart from that, I haven't really heard any recent music that I would classify as rock. Lots of local rock bands around the place, but nothing commercial.
Hang on, isn't that how rock is supposed to be??? I think maybe it's just returned to an earlier form where people do rock for the love of it (it used to be about the music man ;) ), rather than as a purely commercial venture.

we all have our own definitions of rock and roll. It's a big tent. Aerosmith never did anything for this house.

People have been saying rock is dead for so long the statement itself is completely ridiculous. There seems to be this standard whereby adults stop appreciating new music and only consider music of their generation to be 'real'. How sad. People do not stop making good art just because you turned 30.
Open your mind.

This type of thread goes far beyond cliche.
Sure the taste of popular culture will change and lots of music sucks today as it always has.
Rock and Roll is not now nor has it ever been about a few "classic rock" bands from the 60s and 70s.
Rock and Roll is still quite relevant, are you?

Amen to that. Those dirty bastards.
I point my finger at bands like Korn, Disturbed, Linkin Park, Kid Rock, and all the other largely worthless trash that has the nerve to call themselves rock bands.
Good rock is still out there, but fading fast. Bands like The Who, Steppenwolf, The Doors, Motley Crue, Megadeth, Dio doing various shows, Twisted Sister, Ozzy, Blue Oyster Cult, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rush, Thin Lizzy, Rush, they're still out there and actively touring. But they're getting old, and few big time acts are stepping up to the plate to replace them, and that is largely because of ****** bags like the ****ers at Clear Channel.

Wow....that's EXACTLY what I was going to say.
First off, rock is NOT dead. There's still plenty of good rock bands. But rock sure took a hard blow back around late 80s to early 90s. I blame hair bands (Poison being the most classic example).....they really pussified rock. So much so that suddenly bands that were real rock didn't want to be associated with them and called themselves "alternative rock" just to distinguish themselves.
I think Phil Spector shot it in 1997. He said it had to be put down.
Really though there is still plenty of rock to be had out there, it just takes a little digging to find it. What do you consider rock?

God, I thought I was bitter and old, you guys take the cake. You definition of rock is really narrow minded, sheesh.
Rock isn't dead, it fought and evolved defined by the rockers who started it. Rock isn't stagnent (thank god) it ever evolves and becomes different. Thats what is great about rock. If rock was still in the 70's, it really would be dead.
Rock isn't dead, the rock is just dead inside most of you.

Curious, how do you feel about the fact ozzy loves a lot of the new rock (industrial, alt, that weird **** from england etc) and funded most of the bands you hate creating a huge buzz for that "non" rock with his many festivals. If you think those killed rock, than ozzy was at the forefront taking rock down.
I agree everyone you named is rock, your viewpoint on the subject is freaking narrow though, and what the hell is clear channel. :)

I must respectfully disagree with you Maelstrom. So much of the emo crap that "rock" stations play sounds like a combination of sounds of an outhouse, childish whining, and nails on a chalkboard.
There are newer bands I like some, like The Offspring and The Foo Fighters, but by and large, I dislike new "rock".
Edit: As for Ozzy, he's anything but a genius. He's a living example of what drugs will do. He did and still does make okay music, but he's certainly not a person I have respect for.

So, what you're saying is that the bands you've listed are the last real rock? I wasn't even alive when half of those bands made their name. When I hear them I can appreciate the sound for what it is: Classic.
The Classic genre is sort of making a comeback. The British invasion sound is making waves with the bands like Franz Ferdinand, but you don't see them at the top of any chart regardless of genre. Classic rock had it's time and that's the reason for the "classic" designation.
There are plenty of bands stepping it up in "rock" right now, but if you are searching for the "classic sound" you should probably stick with your cassette deck.

Not a fan of emo myself, just because the kids interpret the music like ******* doesnt make the music crap. Last time I checked, unless emo's are getting angry, not one group you named (or their counterparts) actually fits the emo mold (thank god) emo take the angst and depression of grunge to a whole new level.

hahaha...puddle of mud had that one hit right 1999 (maybe more but I don't really listen to them)...loud, it was fun to thrash to.
Greenday I don't mind, but I don't buy their music if that answers your question haha. I remember when greenday wasn't emo...pre-2000

Oh, and Stacey.
Crap, I get blamed for EVERYTHING!!!
Look, there are plenty of people who are still wearing "stone washed" jeans as well. So I guess stone washed jeans aren't dead either. But they certainly aren't mainstream. Rock and roll used to be mainstream for a long time. I think Rap/Hip-Hop and the lust for the Prison culture and street life killed it.

Neither of those bands are emo. If you want emo bands, just ask. I'll link you off some.
I personally think that rock n roll hasn't died. I think it evolved into metal, and all these sub genres. I love tons of new bands, I respect older bands. Out of the old school only thing I listen to is zeppelin, metallica, megadeath, little bit of dio, some aerosmith, etc. I just think lots of people are stuck in a rut of saying all old stuff is real rock and all new stuff is crap, that's fine. But me, I have taste for everything an definitely won't limit myself to all old stuff.
Newer bands that are awesome: killswitch engage, Ill nino, pantera(not really very new), tool, 36 crazy fists, nonpoint, sevendust.

So because it's not 'mainstream' means it dead?
I dunno. I used to love Metallica. Then they became 'mainstream'.
What does mainstream mean? More people listen to it therefore it isn't cool anymore?
If it sounds good to my ears I listen to it. Period. I don't care if it's considered cool or not to listen to mainstream music.
The new album sucked, everything before that I liked. THe sound definitely changed somewhere around the black album however.
