Has anyone ever seen anything like the item for sale in the above link? It doesn't look like something I would want to ride or be near when it is running.

I think I would worry about my hair getting caught in the thing.

I hope someone gives us an explanation for WHY.

The answer to the question "Why?" is always "Because."

Why? You do not have to make it fit into the regular drive train. Just bolt it onto that POS bike and go.

You must have small children :p .

'Because I said so" is the correct full form.

I'm still trying to figure out the purpose of the whole thing. Would it get me up the hills any easier?

I think you can go pretty dang fast with it.
Like 25mph maybe.

East Hill
06-17-07, 02:46 PM
That would be much easier!

The gators do :p . Although, if global warming is true, it may be just a matter of years before they slither into British Columbia  .

Worse then that heavy motor, the fuel tank is way above it. Not only it would be unstable, if there is a leak, Kaboom.

no no...the fuel will leak out , get sucked thru the fan and dispersed in a fog like pattern, then igniting when a cig smoking driver enters the fuel fog BOOOOOOOM, car destroyed!

Looks like it was cobbled together by the seller. I'd be more inclined to get this if it were available.

Here on Long Island, there is an old tricycle on display at the Cradle of Aviation Museum.

The chain drives a propeller, about three feet in diameter.

It's behind glass, and I would say it's a very valuable bicycle, because it was built by the Wright Brothers.

I think the reason it was built was to demonstrate how a propeller works to new students at the flying school.

Do you have photos? Or a link? That's really interesting.

I don't know a link to that particular bike, but the basic concept is very old, and has been done many many times:

Thanks for the link! Perhaps it's just the slightly demented look in that lad's eyes--but that really doesn't look at all safe :) .

...I went to check out the "demented look", and now that I think about it, I suspect it's more a look of embarassment, as it appears he made the propeller shaft too short and had to mount his fork backwards.

I guess it wouldn't be a good idea to try to draft behind any air bike.

comment on that page:
"Propeller driven bicycle, Popular Science 1936 and surely coming soon to a Critical Mass ride"
:roflmao:

Anyone have any idea how I can figure out what size/kind of propeller would work well in that application?

Does anyone else think the prop in that photo looks like it was pasted in from another photo? Both the color/tone and the angle of attachment look odd.

Now this had potential. I saw a prop driven hovercraft hit near 16 knots at an HPV boat championship.
