My bike was starting to sound like it would fall to pieces at any moment. It was actually quite sturdy, but the thing creaked and rattled like a child's toy. So, I embarked on a mission to quiet the thing.
First attempt:
1. The cartridge BB was shot, so I replaced it.
2. I removed the rear rack, greased all connection points, and replaced.
I tested the result and could hear occasional pings from the rear.
Second attempt:
3. I applied a drop of oil where each rear spoke crossed.
Much better. . . except when out of the saddle the front sounded like a duck in distress. I have carbon forks and the infamous Rolf Vector Comps. I remember reading somewhere on the 'net that the endcaps can be very noisy.
Third attempt:
4. I removed the front wheel, removed the axle endcaps, applied a bit of grease between the axle and cap, then reassembled and replaced the wheel.
Wow! But for the whir of the spokes in the wind and the hum of the chain through the derailleur, the bike was absolutely silent. What a joy! But, it was short lived - two days later, while my other fixes persisted, the front wheel creaking resumes.
Rather than attempt every other substance under the sun, I am first seeking your suggestions for how to silence the noise caused by my carbon fork/Rolf wheel combo - any suggestions how to get 'em to shut up?
