Okay, guys, this was to be accompanied by pictures (quite dramatic might I add), but they will just have to be posted tomorrow when I retrieve my power cord and I don't want to wait. Today, Ovoleg, a So Cal member that you may or may not have heard of :p, went down on the Baldy ride and got scraped up a bit. I rode back with him to Encanto and he was a tough guy, but I can tell you, he took a spill! He was very polite and not the least bit whiny! His account about this crash is in the Baldy thread, but basically it couldn't be avoided and he skid several feet skinning up his leg and arm and tearing a small grapefruit-sized hole in his shorts. (again, pictures will be posted tomorrow!)
I've met and ridden with this young man (a student working very hard - and, come on, we can all remember what it was like to be 22 again, right?) and I really like him. I've teased him endlessly about his old cycling shorts that had holes in them (I saw them on the Santa Barbara Century on which he joined and was a very enthusiastic rider). So, today, he shows up in a brand new pair of Pearl Izumi shorts (with no holes). Well, bless his heart, those shorts are now toast and, um, indecent as that hole inevitably will get larger.
Normally, I'm all about indecent, but just in jest! In reality, I feel terrible for him as I'm sure those shorts cost quite a bit! Also, his cleat was destroyed, so he's looking at an expense to replace the shorts and his cleats. So, we (several riders today) came up with the idea - that is NOT a joke - to start a fund to replace his shorts and cleats. We're not talking a whole lot of money here - but enough to get him back into decent coverage!
Therefore, I am appealing to the you, the BF So Cal members, to please contribute to this fund. A $1 to $5 donation is all I'm asking, and if you'll pledge it, I'll collect it from you sometime in the future. I'm hoping that through this appeal, we can get that boy properly covered and cleated. No, I did not ask his permission to do this and he may never speak to me again, but somehow I'll get those shorts and cleats to him! ;)
So, can you find it in your hearts to part with as little as a $1 or as much as $5 to help out one of our younger members? Yes, he can put the expense on a credit card, I suppose, but being my usual busy-body self, I hope to just help him out in his college days.
Please, I ask that NO ONE be mean spirited in the least. If you don't want to donate, fine, but let's keep this thread positive and community oriented! And, Ovoleg, that "leg" will be properly covered before you can say, "Oh, ****, my shorts are ruined." :D
