Folding Bikes - Folding Bikes in SG

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi,
I am considering getting a folding bike for commuting in Singapore. However I would like to ask if the lack of gears will make traveling uphill difficult. Currently, where I am staying have quite a few steep slopes/ staircases.
Another issue is that of cost. I find that the cost of S$600 for a folding bike is quite steep. Is there any other cheaper alternatives and where can I get them at?
Thanks!

I had no trouble on slopes anywhere in SG on my Swift (7 speed gear hub), including the Bukit Timah area. So, 7 speeds or more will certainly handle your needs. If the gearing is not low enough, change it. For value, the Downtube bikes are hard to beat, but shipping may be high. For lower prices, I would see if there's an outlet for Dahon clones from China in Johor Bahar, or KL.

Some of the folk there have several bikes, & I'm sure they'd be pleased to suggest a bike within your budget. They often have group rides, & some great photo's on that site. Quite a few are commuters & would probably be able to help with planning your journey, especially if it involves the MRT.

What is the approximate cost of the bike?
What kind of brands of model are there? Which one do you recommend?

Got to Speedmatrix if you can afford a Dahon, and also to ask about a used one ... good guys there.
