I have a friend that is a little on the large size ex-athlete, he has blossom to 370 lbs. He wants to start cycling, what would be a good bike for his size?
Thanks Pete

I would recommend a good used steel framed bike, due to its strength. Even a Cannondale would be OK.
At 370 lbs, stay away from carbon fiber for right now.
Check out ebay for something good.

I would look for a used Trek 520 or something of that sort that is steel lugged. He will probably want to get a hand made wheel with 36 or 40 spokes for the rear, and if he has the money for the front as well. It is the wheels that will give him the most problems. I am now 354, down from 372, and I ride a Surly LHT with a 48 spoke wheels.

Cannondale CAAD9 or an Inter. Fabricators steel frame. These are a little pricey, so depending on pocket depth, he may want something like a hybrid or flat bar bike. Schwinn makes a few.

I'm a little less than 370 and with much debate and research went with this bike.
I just did a Metric Century on it and it performed exellent! my only recommendation would be change the seat!!! :)
How is it gonna stand up over the summer is yet to be seen..but i feel confident in how it handled everthing will be fine.

For your friend's size and weight, I would recommend either a Kona Hoss or a Kona Dew (base model). Either of these are well-made, extra-sturdy, and reasonably-priced. Happy shopping!
