General Cycling Discussion - Bikeforums TdF Challenge

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Alright, in view of receiving a couple of requests, it's here! Bikeforums TdF challenge. There are two aspects of this one. The first is to see how many miles/km we can ride from July 5 to July 27 (i.e. the duration of the tour).
The second is to ride the 3,427.5km/2,125 mile distance of the tour. Given that we are mere mortals on this forum, this challenge will allow until October 27 to complete that one (although I'm sure there are people here who will have it done much sooner than that!).
This is a 100% honesty system, so use a computer and record those distances accurately! :D
Oh yeah, if anyone actually manages to ride the 3,427.5km distance from July 5-27, they win a no expenses paid holiday in Murwillumbah!
P.S. You can view a map of the route here. (http://www.cyclingnews.com/road/2003/tour03/?id=map2)
Do we have to send urine samples to you Chris?
:D

Do commute miles count?
And why are you un american?
(Being that you've started it on the 4th of July and I'm gonna be out of town and in my wife's car.. :D not fair!!)

Is it possible for me to just post my Odometer reading on July 5th, then post the next reading on July 27th, and another when I've finished all the 3,427.5km of Le Tour? Should take me about 3.5 months. Maybe more maybe less.

Where in the hel! is Murwillumbah?!
Yes great idea, but same questions as on other occasions:
Do we register? Do we post progressive totals (daily, weekly, as we feel like it)?... Here on BFs? Elsewhere (preferably not)? Any restrictions? And the old perennial, do indoor trainer miles count?
Now, how do I enter in the circumference code on my Cateye again?... just so I can tweak the setting a little to a smaller number... oh, oh... right, h-o-n-e-s-t-y. I forget already.

Nope, although you can log your totals on bikeprolog.com or a similar site if you choose to, although maintaining your own spreadsheet is just as good.

As in all the other challenges, pretty much whenever you feel like it.

As I recall, they didn't in any of the others, so they won't this time either.
And yes, commute miles do count.
More info on Murwillumbah can be found at http://www.tropicalnsw.com.au/aaa_site/places/towns/murwillumbah.html
Oh yeah, and I'd prefer not to receive any urine samples in the mail, but thanks all the same.

Do I get bonus points if I ride into work in my bright pink 2001 ONCE kit (it was cheap, and drivers notice you...)?

Only if you post the pics of yourself riding nekkid! :D
BTW Viper, Murwillumbah is located in the Tweed Valley in Northern NSW, Australia. It is the social, political, cultural and economic hub of the universe - except that the rest of the universe doesn't know it yet!
The challenge started yesterday for those of us down under - I scored a rare duck due to non-cycling commitments. I had a cold today and felt like crap, but still managed 136km. First century of the challenge this coming Saturday.
7/5 - 33miles. 7/6 - 33 miles.
66 miles (106 km) ttl.

284km/176.5 miles so far - and I've done it all with a cold. I'll have an easy day tomorrow (just my 26km commute) and start to pick things up a little this weekend.

121 miles for me so far. Taking a day and a half off yesterday and today, but I'll be adding up some more miles soon. :)
7/9 - 54 miles (86.8km) + previous 66 miles (106 km)
= 120 miles (192.8 km)
Guess I'm in the rear of the peleton. Conserving energy for the mountain stages. :p

Only 48 Miles today.I need to pick the pace up if I want to beat ChrisL.

I guess I’m at the back with 53 miles. With all of the thunderstorms we have been having, all I can do is use the trainer. I’ll get 160 miles on Sat. That might move me up in the rankings

Why not? I'm riding a century tomorrow. By the time I get home this evening I'll be up to around 230 miles, I'll confirm that when I update the spreadsheet with this morning's commute and pre-dawn ride.
7/10 37 miles + 120(previous) = 157 miles (171.13km)
I'll pull for awhile tnorman! :D

Well I've hit the mountains this morning. The Alps have got nothing on the Boughton - Dunkirk hill with panniers. I bet even Armstrong would struggle... well he'd have had to have stopped for the temporary traffic lights as well...
Richard
7/11 45 miles (72.4km) + 157 miles (171.13km) = 202 miles (325km). All hills and brutal headwinds today! :p

(227 Miles total)Looks like ChrisL will get to where the YELLOW jersey tomorrow. :)
I'm stuck at the 190k I had on July 6, the last of seventeen straight days of touring in the Baltic states and Poland.

Now up to 552km/342 miles after today's awesome ride in the Tweed Valley. I'll have a nice coastal recovery ride tomorrow to cool down a little. Gee it felt good to finally get some km in after a slack weekend about a week ago.
7/12 202 miles (325km) + 42 = 244 miles (392.5km)

After today's "recovery ride" of 118km, I'm now up to 670km/415.4 miles as of Jul 13. The "suicide" solo breakaway has begun! :D

OK, so I stand a snow balls chance in...well anyway...
Thursday - 6.5 miles MTB
Saturday - 22.8 miles RB
Sunday - 22.8 miles RB
Plus the prior recorded 50 miles = 101.1 +/- so far...
...:D
7/13 67.3 miles (108km) + 202 miles (325km) = 269.3 (433km)
A metric C!

155 + 25 (7/10) + 42 (7/12) + 60 (7/13) = 282 miles (My turn to pull again, Viper :) )
I joined Lance in the mountains today. http://www.crw.org/CTTC/climb2clouds.htm (I did the 60-miler.)
