Does anybody here bomb hills?...do you ride down huge hills on a skateboard?...I was going about 35mph and the asphalt is VERY rough.

I used to have a Trek 850 mountain bike. When it was new, I could only push to about 28 but after about $2,000 of performance upgrades, I could do 35.

Riding in a snow storm is the woot if you have Magura hydraulic rim brakes and Kieth Bontrager rims with ceramic braking surfaces.


Mountain bikes are slower than road bikes. It is their tire structure and weight that keeps them back. I can only assume [timmyquest] has a road bike if he is hitting those speeds. I also have a road bike and can hit about 20mph on flat areas at a comfortable cadence. I can push myself to go faster but there is no need.


Trust me Const, I am well aware of that. But that does not mean that you can't get good speed with the right mods. Apart from the hydraulic brakes, the main performance mods that I had were:

* Bontrager hollow extruded aluminum rims
* Grip shift Xray 8 speed shifters
* Manitou magnesium fork with 6 inch titanium springs (4 inch travel)
* Chain rings and cog set chosen for speed (big front gears and small rear gears)


Also, it helps on pavement if you run with your rear tire on backwards.

One of the things that I used to love about it was out pacing the wannabe experts on expensive road bikes. I still remember one guy I blew past asking me if I had an aluminum frame and tell him “No, Chromaloy”. Lol

As I said, I could do 35 on flat ground but only in 28th gear, which puts a lot of stress on the chain. However, I have a friend who used to do quality control for NASA and he was hooking me up with the very special hard vacuum rated lubricant that they use on the cargo bay door hinges for the space shuttle.


Having more gears will not make your bike faster. If you check out the tour de france guys ,they have special fixed gear type things so they loose the derailler and all the cassettes and everything which shaves off a lot of weight. The only way to make a bike faster is basically making it lighter and training your legs. No matter how much lube or gear ratios you have, your legs and weight are the most important ones. I have a late 70s model Puch Cavette made out of solid steel and it is a 10 speed. I am thinking of just converting it to a 3 speed though to take some weight off. 1st gear for climbing hills, 2nd gear for normal riding, 3rd gear for speed. I don't need all 10 gears even though i use them i could do without them.
