I'm just wondering, from people who have been to Utah. What attractions are there, if I'm going through SLC, provo, and down to Moab.

I mean are there any must goes, other than temple square? Which I'm sure we'll go there. Suggestions, tips, appreciated.

Also in terms of Moab. I was wondering, is it legal in Moab to camp in the middle of the wilderness without a permit? Or do I have to find a designated campground (which costs 20$ psssssssssht  ) to camp? Any trails that are must do's, just in case I want to *ahem* hike them?

Shadiyah, Brian, Kemmer?

I know some of you must be Moab goers. :p

Camp where you want, plenty of free camping spots along the Colorado River up and down stream from town, also free camp spots past slickrock trail on Sand Flats Road, but a fee to get into the area (minimal. and includes slickrock trail), but free camp sites in the area, take big water jugs, it's the desert up there.

But is it ok with whatever park service to do so? I know in Norcal in some places you have to get specialized fire and camping permits to hike into nowhere and camp.

Are there any animal threats? Do we need to pack heat?

You mean like more habaneros and cayenne?

Shifty

No animal threats, no heat required. Most of the land around Moab is BLM or Forest Service, it's OK with BLM, camp in established campsites, or campgrounds that have a water pump. Primative campsites along the river are nice, but no services. There are a couple nice campgrounds right in town that have showers, flush toilets, and just across the street from the brew pub, might be worth the $20 bucks for a couple nights.

Plenty of free camping there, you get what you pay for. Have fun, it ROCKS!! and DO the slickrock trail, it will kick your pink butt!!:D

Well umm... yes in a way. I was thinking bear pepper spray.

That's cayenne oil. So I guess .. yes.

Thanks shifty. We won't need showers or toilets. We'll hike in, with our water, and wipe our butts with sticks.

Gotta do slickrock. We're actually only going to do moab for a day or two, then we're going to desert classic. ;)

City slicker, be careful with the sticks, everything in the desert has thorns, or scorpions on them! Don't forget the sunscreen, no big shade trees to sit under! Have a great time, it is a fun place!

Here ya go brah: http://www.blm.gov/utah/moab/riverway.html

I go 3-4 times a year and try to find a place along the river. If you don't have a metal ring for a pit (many campsites already have them) just build you a nice rock ring to keep the fire in and you shouldn't be hassled.

What exactly is the purpose of the trip? Mountain biking? Family trip? Sightseeing? Will you be staying in hotels or camping?
I always pack heat just in case especially if I'm camping pretty remote. I've come across coyotes and a cougar camping in the LaSalle Mountains just outside of Moab and a bear and her cub up north in the Uintas. That was scary because we came right up on them in a clearing and I had my two daughters with me. I had my rifle with me but that doesn't make you less scared. I told my girls to get behind me and don't move. Momma bear stood up and stared at us for a few seconds and must have gotten a whif of us because she and the cub quickly ran off. Sorry, got off topic.

This just in. Don't want to scare anyone. I've camped there and was actually going to camp there again a couple weekends from now with the family. Not going to happen now.

We'll sleep in the car or camp on the side of the road and/or hike into the middle of nowhere. It's a group of us that want to do it. Mountain biking is the purpose, actually I just said hiking as to not make it bike related.

That's why I asked about animals, if there's any threat of bears or coyotes, forget that. I'll just go to a rentable camping ground.

More people= better chance of faster folks getting away. :p

Nah. I've had bears come into our camp and ravage our locked food box. I'd just feel more comfortable scaring a bear off in the presence of a larger group of people.

Bring a cardboard cutout of Chuck Norris, that will keep the bears and coyotes away for 5 years after you are back from Utah.

I sat in Salt Lake City Airport for around seven hours back in August 1992 on my way to Canada. I don't think that helps you much.

Chill JF1, Pheard will be hundreds of miles from where that bear attack happened!! Pheard, there will NOT be bear problems in Moab, watch for snakes and scorpions, that will be your only problem, if that. I love to sleep under the stars in Moab, there is nothing like it, plus it is going to be very warm at night, so it will feel better to be out, or in a light tent.

I would check out some of the canyons on the Wasatch front if you're going to come up to SLC. Millcreek Canyon and Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons are all gorgeous with plenty of trails to hike and bike on.

When are you planning on coming round? We could all go out for a ride or something! :)

As for Moab, we've camped in the middle of nowhere before on a river rafting trip last summer. It works if you need to. We also camped unofficially in Goblin Valley. I much prefer it that way, actually. A bit more intimate and personal, not to mention quiet. The only hike I can recommend right now is the Little Dead Horse canyon trail. It's a slot canyon trail and absolutely beautiful. We went there in late October of last year, so I'm not sure how it will be right now.

He had mentioned going through SLC and Provo so I thought he might be considering heading up the canyons for some trails and camping. Not meant to scare anyone off.
One of my buddies likes to just throw his sleeping bag on the ground when we camp. No tent or anything. He doesn't mind the bugs crawling all over him. Crazy mo fo.

Okay, drink "of his choice." :) I don't drink either but some of the best food downtown is in the drinking establishments. I'm sure you know of some as well. :) Lunch would be good.

Well we're trying to get a road trip put together between me and a few friends who are going on missions. Right now we don't have the date set but late july early august is what we're thinking. We're actually going to hike in the grand tetons first, then down to moab, then down to south mountain/desert classic in phoenix, az. Well that's the idea. We're all very poor and most likely be fueling ourselves on oatmeal and other cheap carbs.

We definitely could do a ride, if you wanted to try and hook up with us for slick rock trail or something Shad. Closer to us coming I'll pm you about it and give you my number. As far as meeting up for lunch, our schedule is literally riding, sleep, leaving, and doing that from destination to destination, so I don't think we have time to meet for food or anything.

Of course this is still in the early planning stages and is still just an idea. Hopefully it'll work out.

Sounds like a fun trip! How many days do you plan on being on the road? Late July / Early Aug is a really bad time to be in Moab... Take lots of water, lots of sunscreen and an alarm clock. Plan on finishing any mtn biking before 11am. Spend the afternoons in the La Sal mtns east of moab or go play in the Colorado river.

Where are your friends going on there Missions?

I'm not sure if we'll be able to make it down to Moab, but if you're in SLC we'll definitely go riding with you around the canyons here! Lots of great places! :) Hell, I'll even cook you guys enchiladas or something for afterward! :)
