I'll be participating in a 24hr adventure race in October, and am wondering if there are any good training schedules out there. I'm looking for something akin to the marathon schedules you see floating around in books and whatnot.

In the past my training has been kind of a hit or miss, what-I-feel-like-doing-that-day sort of thing. I think if I have a better calendar with some concrete goals it may help me out. Thanks,

Matthew

when you say 24hr adventure race, i assume you mean multisport with running, cycling, swimming/paddling, etc...

i think most of the triathlon or Ironman training books/resources would have appropriate stuff. the difficulty is juggling training between the various sports. most tri guys do 2 sports on most days, although take one day a week completely off (or super-light spinning only).

and of course i recommend doing double/triple training where you ride and then run with a "transition" --- in the past i found these training sessions really helped --- especially if it is a team event, do it together!

other than a Triathlon training book i have "time-saving techniques for Multi-Sport Athletes" which is about 4 years old, i don't directly know of any resources, but shouldn't be too hard to find in most tri books...

on the other hand, if you just mean a 24hr cycling race i would just say normal training with some long long rides thrown in should do the trick - so basically any bike training schedule should work. the Munich 24hr mountain bike is this weekend a good friend of mine is doing it... i *can't* b/c i am leading a guided tour, otherwise i'd be riding.

That sounds good, I don't know why I didn't think to look at some triathlon stuff. You're correct, it's running, biking, and paddling - about 60 bike, 20 of the other two, with the usual lame "mystery" events thrown in.

cool! sounds like fun ---- i was pretty into adventure racing when was back in the states, but here there are very few races --- i mean there is the Solomon Extreme 3-day race but in general there are not so many.

i did the 2-day Sea-2-Summit in British Columbia and then 3 Hi-Tech races (we got 9th place in my last Hi-Tech in 1999!!)

oh, i always fun the "mystery events" great --- i definitely wouldn't call them lame --- but then i'm an experienced rock climber and orienteer and just all-round sporty, so for me i really love the special tests which help me as others may have trouble. for the finish of the National Championship of the Hi-Tech in 1998(we finished 19th) there was the "scale a wall" and i did the thing faster than any other team - stood on my teamate's shoulders, jumped to the wall rim (played volleball in college), did a pull-up over the wall and then lifted our woman straight up over the wall, then our third guy grabbed the rope and i yanked him up (weight lifting pays of for something)

yeah, do tri workouts and then make sure to do some LONG endurance training. have fun!

I guess when I say lame I really mean lack of creativity. Man over the wall sounds pretty good, ours are more like easy tightrope crosses, filling buckets with water, etc.; like relay race stuff you do in elementary school.

The tri workout sounds like a good plan, I think I'll head over to Barnes & Noble and checkout their selection on the topic.
