Hey you Austin-ites! I'll be in Austin at the end of July to see my family for a week. I am bringing a friend with me that has never been to TX (imagine that, a whole life without the Great State of Texas in her life?! whaaa?). Anyhoo, I know I want to show her the cool things about Austin that I love: Barton Springs, Alamo Drafthouse, see some live music (probably at the Saxon Pub, depending on who's playing where), eat fabulous TexMex and drink killer 'ritas....you get the idea.

I'm looking for more ideas so I can show my poor depraived friend a Big Time in the Capital City. Any other suggestions?

thanks!
Liz

Dang, I'm just going to miss you CycleMagic! I'll be down there mid-month myself.

There's a tex-mex place in Austin that Lance used to frequent after discovering he had cancer. Name escapes me at the moment but I'm sure someone will chime in with it.

Cuda, I'll also be in Dallas after the Austin tour. Austin is the fun trip, Dallas is the work/conference trip. I'll have more fun in Austin!

I wish we were bringing bikes, but, alas, that isn't going to work out this trip.

I think he ate at Chuy's a lot, which is the Tiagra of Austin Tex-Mex joints. ;)

Oh, and for the original poster - Esther's Follies is still going strong, the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum at 19th and Congress/Speedway is pretty impressive, and KGSR (http://www.kgsr.com) has a weekly (I think) concert at the Shady Grove.

Mmm Chuys big bean burrito. Yum. In dallas it's eat 3, get the 4th one free I believe. Or eat 2 get the third free or something.

What part of DFW will you be checking out?

CM what size bike do you need? I'm sure we can find something for you
when you're up here in DFW area.

awww, thanks, lotek! I will be in DFW (actually, downtown Dallas) for a conference after my fun Austin trip. I don't think I'll have any time to ride as these things usually occupy my time from breakfast to 2 a.m. (gotta "network" with the vendors ya' know!) every day. I am usually hard pressed to catch a quick run during downtime between board meetings and conference workshops. Thanks for the offer anyway, that was very sweet of you! Hate that I'll be in Dallas and not get to meet any BF'ers!

On that note, however, if any BF'ers in the Austin area want to meet up for drinks or whathaveyou, send me a PM. My friend and I will be there July 21-26.

The JFK museum is pretty cool to check out too while you are there.

Yes, it is very interesting. I got to check it out in the Fall during Road Trip 2006. Thanks for the suggestion, EJ.

ok, if you can't ride we could do a dinner type get together or summat. I'm
sure you can sneak away for an hour or two?
btw what business? vendors?

perhaps. I'll have to see how things all shake out. I have some dinner meetings that I have to attend. It would be great fun to meet up, though!

The conference I am attending is the Association of Driver Rehabilitation Specialists. I sit on the board, thus the extra meetings. We are a group of professionals, mostly Occupational Therapists and Driver Educators that evaluate clients for fitness for driving after illness, injury, or because of other disabilites.

The vendors are those companies that either make or sell or install the equipment that goes into an adapted vehicle for disabled drivers. Pretty fun stuff! We are all a little crazy, so it is always a wild time. I look forward to it every year.

CM, two words about Austin...

Hut's Hamburgers.

(even for me since they have righteous veggie burgers, not to mention the onion rings <melt>)

You can also hit up their sister pizza restaurant around the corner, Frank and Angie's.

It is also very likely a great show will be playing at Stubb's.

Not the greatest venue always for seeing a show, but the atmosphere is worth it.

I see who it is, I post about coming to Austin to ride and get a whopping 1 reply after several days. A pretty lady comes to down and suddenly all of Texas comes a callin.

What size do you ride CycleMagic? I bet we can come up with something for you between all of DFW riders.

Jeff, Marty beat you to that suggestion and CM has already politely stated that she is most likely not going to have time to sneak a ride in while she's up our way.

I am just going to start PMing all my posts to Cuda for pre approval.

At least you'll get to ride when you are down there, so quitcher*****in! :D I only get to lounge around at Barton Springs, eat Hut's Hamburgers, hear some tunes at Stubbs, have some fun at Esther's Follys get some history at the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum and who knows what all else. But no bicycle riding. :D

OH! I forgot....I want to add to my jersey collection. As Jsharr already knows, I have a kickin' jersey from Richardson Bike mart in Dallas so I MUST get one from Austin. Any suggestions? I don't think there are women's jerseys at the UT bookstore (I looked the last time I was there). any good LBS I need to check out?

thanks.

WHOO HOO! The great Austin Invasion is almost upon us! I'll be coming in on Saturday and am so excited! I've been checking out the Chronicle online, looking for some music to see, but nothing is catching my eye. Any suggestions? Please?

Ironic Mullet

Bicycle Sport Shop (http://bicyclesportshop.com/) on S. Lamar will have the UT club kit if they ever got shipped. I don't think the other licensed jersey has a women's cut.

Nelo's Pro Cycles (http://nelosprocycles.com/) on Anderson Lane is probably your best bet for a less-common jersey.

If I was going to see a band on Saturday, it'd be Bob Schneider at Antone's or Lil Cap'n Travis at the Cactus Cafe (on the UT campus). Bob always puts on a great show, and the Cactus is a great intimate venue. Mingo Fishtrap at Threadgills could be entertaining as well.

If you are up north rather than downtown, The Brew at Reed's Supper Club (in the Arboretum) are supposed to be good to dance to. Never seen them myself, though.

Thanks, IM. I appreciate the suggestions! I am so excited for this trip! Looks like I'll be at Beertown or Beercity or Beerworld...something...on Wednesday night; my daughter's boyfriend's band is playing. That should be interesting and fun. We are also going to TC's on Monday night; this little dive shack of a blues bar. Lots of character goes in that place.

Cyclemagic - enjoy your trip down to Austin. I certainly enjoyed mine last weekend. There's a ton to do in Austin, you'll find yourself wanting to go back.

GAH!!! Rain in the forecast for the whole week! make it stop!!!!! Haven't you people had enough rain already?

Ironic Mullet
07-20-07, 10:01 AM
We're trying frantically to get up to 100 days of rain before the end of July.

CycleMagic
07-20-07, 12:49 PM
well, if it rains really hard on one day, does that count as two? I'm just sayin'...perhaps you could get all the rain you need before I get there. I'm willing to compromise, you know. I'll be satisfied if it rains between the hours of 2 and 6 am. everybody's happy!
