Fifty Plus (50+) - Found some bike clothes

I found a sun-protective long-sleeve shirt at Skin-Savers.com, but the folks are on vacation until June 27 so I need to wait to order it. Meanwhile I decided to go to Target to see what they have. Lo and behold, I found my new bike apparel there. Black stretchy (non-cotton) VERY comfortable (and stylish!) crop pants, and a turquoise zip-up jacket with black side and back vents (also stretchy, non-cotton). I gave them a test ride last night and they were very comfortable and, most importantly, they go great with my black bike and hot pink helmet. ;) Both are made by Champion.

Next ride, I will wear my padded liners under these pants.

Got to feel much better than cotton, doesn't it? Polyester has really come a long way. I remember the first clothes made out of it felt like plastic! I have a t-shirt made of Cool-Max Alta, that has to be my favorite.

There are days that I could use the bicycle helmet cover. Since I wear my hair in a buzz cut I have come in with some very interesting sunburn patterns on my head. Talk about a crown on lightning bolts.

That's why I always wear a bandana. You can get skin cancer on your scalp.

Now you've convinced me to check out Target, at least. Not that I'll be doing any extreme riding; it's just better to feel cool and comfortable. Made the mistake of doing some test rides in what I thought was a very light cotton T --- <insert hot/sweaty/grumpy smiley here>. So it's either biking clothes or starting a barenekkid bike club in my area. Trust me, none of us want that :D

I went to Target yesterday as well and got 2 jerseys, but they were short sleeve. They didn't have any long sleeve at all.

The wicking poly shirts at Target are a really good deal. They do sometimes have long sleeve. Probably stocked somewhat seasonally.

I never put sunscreen above my eyes. I tried that years ago and had some terrible experiences with sweat and sunscreen running into my eyes. Bandannas and skull caps keep the sun off the dome and the sweat out of the eyes with no burning.

That is true, now that I ponder it. I wear a Halo seatband so I don't get much in my eyes, but when I do it's really toxic.

And do-rags just look cool.

Wal-mart has athletic works brand dry-star shirts, shorts, underwear, and socks. These clothing items work well for me. I actually get a nice cooling effect as sweat evaporates from the clothing.

The LBS owner keeps at me about purchasing his bike specific jersey but they are covered with advertising. I keep telling him he needs to pay me to be a rolling billboard instead of purchasing one.

The C9 stuff at Target is great. I have both the long and short sleeve polo's.

I went to a Sports Authority and the nice young salesperson showed me some $40.00 wicking jerseys and I told her that was crazy. She gave me a look like she felt sorry for me and then told me that they had a clearance rack in the rear of the store. I went back there and got a Nike shirt for $17.00 and a Diadora shirt for $11.00. I also went to Target and got 2 shirts, 1 for $11.00 and 1 for $9.00. I think the Nike may wick away the sweat a little better, but they are all so comfortable that I could wear them all the time.

I'll test my new bike outfit tomorrow on a longer ride (20+, I hope?) along with my liners underneath the crop pants. I didn't realize I picked up such hot items in the C9 line at Target.... I hope they don't catch on and raise their prices!

Now if only I can find a vest-jacket (w/removable sleeves) later in the fall/winter for a price much lower than I've seen at bike shops....:eek:

I found some good deals on athletic gear. There's a chain of stores named "Gabriel Brothers" that started in Morgantown, WV back when I was a college student. They buy overstocks, remainders, close-outs, and stuff that has small defects. Most of the stuff is perfect and brand new. Some of it is stuff that leaves one wondering why such a color or style was ever made. I think they are up to about 35 stores now, around WV, Pennsylvania, & Ohio and is spreading out from there into Kentucky, Maryland, and Virginia.

I always visit the store each time back to WV as you can find some great deals there. This time was no exception. They had a large rack of the Champion C9 stuff from Target. Jerseys were $4.99 each. Mesh shorts were $5.99. They also had racks of Nike gear.

I've been using the C9 gear for several months now and really like it. It breathes very well and keeps me cool.
