You guys might remember earlier this week that I found my son's stolen bicycle before I even knew it was stolen. That story ended well.
Today, I went outside to mount my trusty steed and bicycle commute to work. The weather has been fine, so I have been riding my very favorite bicycle which I only ride when the weather is nice; my full Campy Benotto. Oh, I love that bike.
This morning when I went outside, it was gone. GONE! I locked it up the best I could with a cable lock, but there is nothing to lock it too, so I threaded the cable through the rear wheel (I know - stupid, stupid!). The bike was parked in my gated backyard. Ya, I know it was stupid especially since we just had a bicycle theft a few days before.
I was crushed. I went to work just depressed as hell. I called the police who seemed to take it seriously, but were not encouraging about any hope of recovering the bike.
At 10:30 AM this morning, I got a call from my wife. The neighbor who lives behind us was walking his dog and found a "fancy bicycle with a face molded in the head tube" stashed in the bushes a couple of streets over. He wondered if it might be one of my bikes. He did not know that my bike was stolen. He just guessed that it might be.
I WANT TO BUY A THANK YOU GIFT FOR MY NEIGHBOR. WHAT DO YOU GUYS RECOMMEND? I KNOW THAT HE LIKES MOTORCYCLES.
My wife and son hurried over to the spot and sure enough, there it was! The idiot thief apparently grabbed it, jumped the fence, carried it and then decided to ride it - not noticing that there was a cable on the back-end.
I was delighted to find that cable was wrapped around the hub and a couple of spokes were broken. I have a fantasy that the thief apparently took a nasty tumble. Oh boo hoo. Crocodile tears for that guy. Maybe he is even missing some front teeth. I'll have to check the handlebars for telltale signs.
Now, of course, EVERYTHING is under lock and key inside the house and now the garage is locked too.
The good news is that I am moving out of this ghetto neighborhood this weekend. The neighborhood was nice when we moved in 17 years ago, but deteriorated since.
