Southern California - Cool Breeze Question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm signed up for Cool Breeze this summer. I've already done the Century twice and the Metric once. The DM is not gonna happen as I don't get enough training miles in to want to push for that. However, what I'm thinking about is doing a hybrid. I would start out with the DM course, up through Ojai and through Casitas Pass and then eventually back down to the flatlands. At some point, I would then leave that route and join up with one of the regular courses for the return.
When does the DM actually catch the other riders? Is that at Manning Park or earlier? Anyone else interested in trying a hybrid?

I believe Manning Park (at around mile 90??) was the last stop where you can make that choice, before reaching "Cali Hill". I remember some DM riders chose to go back at that point taking the century route.....but they still ended up with like 120 miles. I stayed with the DM route.

George is correct, cept I remember it being around mile 103 before we headed up "Cali hill" -- where I first met George as I was spinning at about 3mph, and apologizing for slowing him down!

What's "Cali hill"?
Do you mean Ortega hill, just north of Summerland?

Probably. "CaliHill" is named after Caligurl (BF Member) who absolutley loves this climb:D

Yup Yup... We call it Cali Hill becuase Caligurl loved it !
Sheldon, even if you connect in with the century route you will be close to the Double Metric length. You can ride the Double Metric no problem. I've seen you ride !

Hmmm..I had thought the route would drop into Montecito, and rather than going farther north, I would opt for south at that point. I figured around 40 miles from start to there and then about 32 back. I've never looked at the DM cue sheet so it occured to me that once the DM returns to the coast, it pretty much joined the shorter rides.

Thanks Adam! I'm sure I can knock down the mileage if I really had to. I'm generally pretty strong at the end of CB. Just don't know that I feel like spending that much time on the bike!

I think the only difference by doing the hybrid route is you end up doing about 10 miles less than the DM route and avoid some steep, but short climbs. You're still eligible for popsicles though, regardless....:D

I have some friends that did a route similar to what you are proposing last year. They started on the DM route, rode it through Ojai & Casitas Pass, they then followed the route to SAG stop at Manning Park, where they then followed the normal Century return route back to Ventura. I think they said total mileage was around 80 miles with over 5,000 ft of climbing.

I actually did the hybrid route last year w/pico & mrs pico, she didn't feel like climbing anymore. Distance is about the same. If from Manning Park to Rincon, you go the century route, you really just avoid the extra climbing and less than an additional mile or two in distance. On that hybrid route last year total mileage was 126 and climbing was 6900 ft.

Ah, I thought there was a way to do this. I'm just kinda scouting out ideas for a change of pace, maybe try something different while still having the SAG and crowd support available. And perhaps I wouldn't be the only one trying this!
Thanks.

Cali Hill is the hill the double metric guys get following the 2nd stop at Manning Park. It is basically East Mountain/Park Lane/Bella Vista. Caligurl used to (jokingly) complain about the hill at the 100 mile point yet she would smoke it every year. Hence, it became her hill.
Instead of this hill, lots of DMers just take Ortega Hill back.
The peak at mile 100 is CaliHill
