View Full Version : TexMex
What local DFW places around here do you guys like going to? I haven't had texmex in a while, and want to check out something new. Uncle Julios in addison and Chuys is pretty good. I've been to On the Border too much. There is this place called Rios on the southwest side of Preston/Royal that is very good. Fernandos on Northwest Highway and Midway is nice too. Now I want chips and queso.
The last one I went to that wasn't On the Border (meh...) was El Norte Mexican Grill (http://www.elnortegrill.com/) in Plano. Not bad :)
Agave Azul (http://www.agaveazultx.com/), Carrollton TX (I-35 & Frankford)
Blue Goose Cantina is usaully pretty good.

Abuelos in Arlington off of i20 by the mall is very good, but kinda pricy.
Beto's in Grand Prairie off i20 and Great Southwest parkway is good as well, and cheaper than Abuelo's.

Discovered a new place that's a chain, Cristina's (Fine Mexican). It seems they don't have their own website, but they are all over the place. They tend to have a patio where we can sit outside and watch our bikes (and show off and talk about and admire) when we have another TXBF Get Together.
<editted> Just Sayin' we oughta have another. ;)
La Hacienda Ranch is great too.
Ohhh.... yeah, Christinas is good for a small chain place. :)

You guys suck. The "TexMex" up here in New England is....well it's not. Let's just say that.
I can't wait until August when I am back in Texas.
El Patron de TexMex in Dallas is Matt Martinez.

Yeah! Anyplace Mat Martinez runs! So what day of the week (not on the weekend) are we available (in the DALLAS County area) to get together? As far as I'm concerned, any day, the place should have a patio and good margaritas (not from a mix ).

Definitely get some homemade, hot, fresh flour tortillas when you go! I'd stick with the traditional Mexican entrees over the Tex-Mex stuff here, though. The fajitas weren't stellar, and the Tex-Mex combo plate I had last (enchiladas, chile relleno, rice/beans) was all right, but the shredded marinated pork entree (name escapes me at the moment) was fantastic! The next time Cuda and I go, we're going to try the tamales and sopapillas.

Fort Worth: Joe T. Garcias (http://www.joets.com/), El Rancho Grande
Multiple Locations: Pappasitos (http://www.pappasitos.com/), Mexican Inn (http://www.mexicaninncafe.com/)
Have you been to Gloria's (https://gloriasrestaurants.com/home.php) in Colleyville? It is more South American (El Salvador), excellent food.
My favorites anyway!
Been to Joe T's once, friend and co-worker make the trek out there from McKinney on a regular (weekly?) basis. I believe there are other Gloria's around, but can't remember exactly where. (Addison, that's right, knew I'd seen one around). Haven't tried the others either... but always looking for an excuse for TexMex or Mexican, or Texan (BBQ?) for that matter.

The first Glorias I went to was up in addison at belt line and the tollway...somewhere over there. But yeah I've been to the Cville one oh around 2 years ago. I thought it was really good, but for some reason no one in my family wants to go there again heh. I like the bean dip.

Plano - Luna De Noche, Preston and Plano Parkway NW Corner. One of my favs. A bit upscale, but really good.
Frisco - La Hacienda Ranch for fajitas rocks, Cantina Laredo and Gloria's is also great.
Addison - I'm partial to Blue Goose and Cantina Laredo
Dallas - Countless. Depends on where you are.
YES, Luna de noche, I went to that location with my mom when I was freshman in HS 2 years ago. It was maybe 10:30pm, and it was very dim inside, but the music they played was like a really cool trance/electronic kind..I think one song was Sadeness by Enigma, and it was pretty loud, which made that night even more excellent in there...and it's nice that the ceiling has the starts and a moon-from what I remember.

Los Lupes on Industrial is a favorite lunch spot for me. 5.99 all you can eat buffet:)
Another good one is Ojeada's on Maple. It's been a while & I'm not too sure if they are still open. Or the one on 75 in Plano

I forgot about Abuelo's! Very good food, a little pricier than most TexMex places, but the papas con chile (essentially mashed potatoes with cheese and chilies, quite mild) are quite delicious.

Okay, all this talk about Tex-Mex is making me hungry! When and where are we going to meet? Dallas? Ft Worth? Between? What day of the week?
Someone organize this and I'm so there. :D

You guys could come to Fort Worth and we could do some Joe T.'s. They have redone the area around the pool (see gallery pics on the website above), however, I'm always willing to come to the Big D as well.
Joe T's would be good if we go on a weekday after traffic dies down, and if we could get a table for all of us without a 3hr wait!
That place sounds familiar with the pool. I think I may have been there when I was little.

Some considerations if we do go to Joe T's. They only serve two things, enchiladas or fajitas, and they only take cash. Well worth it though.
Can we have a show of who might be interested?

I tried to get Tex Mex in Detroit once, lol. Went by the most authentic looking ad in the phone book. We got there, and ordered. The "lettuce" was cabbage, and they used Mozzarella cheese!?!?!?! They were trying to tell us some BS about "regions" of Mexico using different ingredients. The "hot sauce" was rotel with tomato sauce in it, no I'm not kidding. People were sitting around making yumm noises, and other signs of delight. I wanted to vomit, lmao. Since then I don't order if I'm outside of Texas. Arizona has some good places, but corn relish with black beans?? Oh well, I'm staying in Houston, haha.,,,,BD
^ ^ Note to self, never eat TexMex north of the mason-dixon line.

Once in Colorado I ordered 'Chile con Queso' at a mexican restaurant.
They gave me a bowl of beef chili with some grated cheddar mixed in.

Add Benito's in Cowtown to this list, and El Chile on Manor Road in Austin. Once in a while, just for old time's sake, we'll hit Mi Tierra in San Antonio, in part just to take in the ambience of the year-round Christmas decorations...

Coupla exceptions: handful of dives in the Pilsen neighborhood in Chicago are as authentically solid as anything you'll find in Austin or San Antonio. Probably because the proprietors' families all live in Austin or San Antonio...

In Houston, it's got to be Andy's. 11th St near Studewood. After reading this thread, I went there last night, hehe. Chicken enchiladas, rice and refried beans, and a crispy beef taco on the side. The tortilla for the
taco was cooked, not a premade shell like the chains. I cleaned the plate, hehe. Nothing like REAL Tex Mex food. The chains come close "sometimes" but I swear some their stuff comes from a can, hehe.,,,,BD
Rios on the southwest corner of Preston/Royal is awesome! It's right south of Popolos.

Having grown up on the border, I'm into the authentic stuff. My favorite Mexican place is Tacos El Guero (el gwero) at Bryan and Carroll in East Dallas. I go there all the time since it is only 3 blocks from me. Get the Tacos de Cabeza (barbacoa) ro Tacos El Pastor (Trompo). They are phenomonal and just like interior Mexico. Over around Columbia and Carroll and on East Grand there are lots of great Tex-Mex places.

Some of my favorites, there are all in Dallas:
1. El Ranchito in Oak Cliff on Jefferson
2. Mia's on Lemon Ave
3. Matts' Rancho Martinez in Lakewood
4. Mis Casuelas on Columbia east of downtown
5. Manny's Uptown
6. La Marketa Cafe in the Farmer's Market ( the soft corn fajita tacos are superb, get the green salsa, muy caliente)

In DFW only El Fenix and Joe T. Garcias really get Tex-Mex right. After all, those two establishments along with EL Chico(before it was ruined by corporations) invented Tex-Mex. The Martinez family or El Fenix, invented many mainstream dishes that you see today in Tex-Mex restaurants. I have seen both Stephen Pyles and Dean Fearing eating at El Fenix. Great place and very little has changed since I was a little kid.
If you want Mex-Mex, few places do it better than Javier's. La Calle Doce on 12th has good coastal Mexican food featuring lots of seafood. Taquerias and taco stands along Jefferson and Davis offer real Mexican food at rock bottom prices but many gringos may not like the food since it is geared towards a real Mexican palate.
The other restaurants others mentioned above serve decent food but are largely judged more by the strength of their mixed drinks.
Mariano's has OK Mexican food, but is a must visit at least once since they invented the frozen margarita.
www.dallasfood.org has some reviews of area Mexican and Tex-Mex eateries if you are interested.

There is a Taqueria stand I believe is next to La Marketa Cafe that has the most authentic gorditias I have had in Dallas. Made with soft corn and filled with your choice of meats and topped with goat cheese.
BTW three things I have never seen Mexico in all the times I have been there is: yellow cheese, ground beef or shredded lettuce; but i digress we are talking about Tex-Mex here.
I agree with what someone mentioned before there are many small Taqueria stands and shops that serve excellent Mexican at rock bottom prices if you don't mind having to muddle your way through the language barrier.

Yes, thats the one, it's right in the center of the walkway. I may just go there for lunch today.:D
Mercado Juarez! (Dallas and Arlington)
I've never been that thrilled with Joe T. Garcia's, and Pappasitos and On the Border substitute quantity for quality (though they're not terrible).
The best Mexican restaurant I've eaten at - ever - is Fonda San Miguel in Austin.
