My partner and I are planning a week long trip to Novia Scotia during the first week of July. We are staying in a cabin about 40 miles from Yarmouth. Does anyone have any advice on the road riding in the area?

Thanks,
barba

Our 100 Series highways are not really cyclist friendly so I would recommend staying to the secondary roads. These will provide more scenery and a more relaxed pace if you so desire. That being said our secondary roads are notorious for lack of maintenance and can be a bit rough.Shoulders are mostly gravel with some drops from the pavement to the shoulder. Drivers are generally courteous but you do have to keep aware. Local traffic can range from cars and trucks to tour busses, logging trucks and construction equipment. I'm not trying to scare you off and the scenery, food and hospitality usually more than make up for road conditions. The Province has been slowly repaving and upgrading some of the secondary roads so you may run into some smooth cycling. Here's a link to the provincial site where you can order a free guide:
http://www.destination-ns.com/forms/guide.asp
It's free and contains a wealth of info regarding sights of interest, accomadations, places to eat and a map.
Hope you enjoy your visit.

The Yarmouth area is quite scenic and a bit flatter for cycling. You should come prepared for a variety of weather.Generally evenings can get cool with fog quite common in the mornings. We've been having a spell of wet weather lately so hopefully by mid July things will have settled down.Afternoons are usually quite pleasant with the wind picking up after lunch.basically the old saying," if you don't like the weather then wait five minutes",holds true. You should be ok with clothes for warm, cool, wet and sunny weather.Sun screen and fly dope are a must.Have a great trip.
