Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

UPDATE: here's the nighttime shot:

The LD500... aaaaand the NiteRider. 'nuf said ;) That was shot from a distance of about 10 meters. I deliberately blocked off the headlights for this comparison shot.

Ehhh, one more. This one really gives insight on the actual visual impact of putting your face in the line of fire:

Ok, so I'm on a rampage with my new Canon A60 camera :) and it can shoot .AVI movies at 320 x 240. So here's a daytime shot of my old NiteRider rear flasher. I'm often harping on its value as a safety light even during the daytime, so here's what it actually looks like.

http://home.comcast.net/~t.mcfadden/MVI_0102.AVI (3Mb file, 10 seconds, should play in Windows Media Player 6.4 or later)

By way of contrast, the blinkie below the NiteRider is a Cateye LD500.

Regarding the movie, I used a little el-cheapo flex-leg tripod that I got with the camera for just $2 more, or else the shot wouldn't be that steady, not with the amount of coffee I drink :D The camera shoots at 30fps, I believe, which is why the blinking of the lights is not "right" (the Cateye always fires three-blink bursts, and the NiteRider doesn't "stutter," but it doesn't look like it in the video).

It certainly packs a punch :) You can imagine what it's like in actual darkness... I feel sorry for anyone who has the misfortune to pull up to a stoplight behind me at night! Having one of these hammer you at eye level for 45 seconds... NOT fun. :p

Even if I'm already visible enough, this makes motorists do a "whoa, what's that" which keeps my presence in their conscious thought better, so they don't pass and then turn right in front of me, for instance. Maybe that's just my imagination at work :)

I'll see about shooting another movie clip after dark, too.
