A training race. A F**KING training race. A rider goes down in the one turn on the course. No contact, nothing. I went down trying to avoid him. I finished the race with a mild scraped knee, wondering why my bike didn't feel quite as stiff.

The top tube is cracked. I'm too pissed off to take pics.

I need a frame ASAP to finish the season, and I'm working with my sponsoring shop for a deal on a CAAD9 to finish the season with.

It's a tool, not a jewel. But it was my favorite tool--my weapon. My dream bike.

Guess we'll see if Calfee can work his magic on it to resurrect it.

:(

Bummer. Super sorry to hear that but at least it wasn't one of those "catastrophic failures" that we hear about in regards to carbon. Also good news that no one was badly injured.

Pete, I'm also more than happy to give you my aluminum Felt frameset. I'll even put in wrench time transporting components over. It's 56cm, just let me know. I'll do whatever it takes to get you up and going again.

Thanks, bdcheung. If it's looking desperate in terms of getting a frame fast I'll let you know. I really appreciate it.

Yeah, I'm serious.

The Pinarello's a 57, but I'm a 58 in most other frames.

you can use my bike/frame if you want for reston. its a 57

DrPete

The Zipps were at home with the glue drying. My Powertap wheels were completely fine. I think someone behind me just fell on the frame after I went down.

Right. I mean, I finished the race with a scraped knee and a little pain in my hip. Other than a little road rash on my right knee I'm fine.

Could've been a lot worse.

Sorry to hear this, Pete. I'd offer a Giant OCR3 (large) frame and carbon fork that are collecting dust here, but I figure you want something a little higher end for racing. But it's here if you get in a pinch.

What am I saying...I should be pissed because you didn't sacrifice yourself to save the bike! ;)

not to ask a stupid question, but they wouldn't happen to have some sort of crash replacement policy, would they?

omfg, I'm so sorry about that. That has to be so frustrating. No bikes in my stable that would fit you, or I'd offer along with everyone else.

It sounds like the crack wasn't from structural stress, just a poorly placed bump. Talk to Calfee about a repair. I know a guy with a repaired Cervelo P3 and a repaired Hed 4 wheel. $75, looks awesome... I know the paint is a different story, but this doesn't have to be a totaled frame.

Also, go to the framebuilder's forum, search, then ask. This can be probably be fixed...

Oh man, that super sucks. If you weren't a rational person I'm sure you'd accuse me of jinxing you yesterday when I posted "Damn, DP - you actually race crits with that? I would be waaaayyyy too scared to crash it - it's too pretty."

A teammate of mine cracked the top tube in his Orbea Orca almost completely in two. He sent it to Calfee and they were able to repair it in about 3 weeks. Aside from a section of carbon that doesn't quite match, the frame is fine. He's been racing on it since February with no issues.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to bounce it to Calfee for an estimate. I agree that it can probably be fixed.

If it's a simple crack, and especially if it's in the middle of a tube, Calfee can probably repair it so that you'll never know the difference. That Pinarello is painted, right?

I just sold a Calfee tri bike, and I sent it to them on two different occasions for repairs: once for a cable stop that came unglued, the other time for a rear brake bridge. Each time, you couldn't tell where they'd added material. They show some examples on their web site of some "interesting" repairs, to say the least.

Oh yeah..count on it taking about 4 times as long as they say it will take. They're really nice on the phone but they're not very organized. :)

For riskus and Craig Calfee---here are the pics: And yes, it's into the fibers. I can push the broken CF into the frame just ahead of the "N."

steel is real  <ducks for cover>...sorry man that really sucks, a friend of mine has had a Time Edge for about 3 months...he was cleaning and looked down at the drive side chainstay and saw a huge chunk out of the carbon....must've been chain suck in his case. I think i'll stick with aluminum or steel...sucks man but hope u get a new bike soon!

We can repair damage to most any brand of carbon fiber frame. From minor chain suck to frames broken in half. We can even make a flexy frame stiffer. The repair job is usually hard to notice and people are surprised at how good they look.

Even though it's hard to find a light in this situation, just be glad that it isn't cracked in a higher-stress area. The top tube barely gets any stress. Craig will be able to make that good as new ASAP. Use the CAAD9 or whetever as a backup.

What happened to the Flyte?

Sold off when I got the Pinarello. It was a little too big, actually, once I started racing on it and knew what I wanted in a frame...

Holy crap, you weren't in the C race were you? I had a couple guys go down right in front of me, I had to go offroad to avoid 'em, and recover with the pack a hundred yards in front of me....

Sorry to hear about your bike Dr Pete...that sucks!

Did you watch the "C" race at all (I know better than to think you were in it)? I was the stupid rabbit in a yellow jersey on a Nekid CAAD9, my dumb arse got aggravated with the slow pace, got out front on lap 2, stayed in front until lap 4, fell back a bit, then "our" crash happened...I caught back up, sucked wheel(s) for a few more laps, and with 3 laps to go decided to move up, took the lead and stayed there until there was about a 1/3 of a lap to go, when the pack decided to turn up the heat and go for the finish, my legs said let 'em go, and my lungs agreed...

Lesson learned: Pulling for 4 laps is way more work than any "one" fool rabbit should do....

Major bummer.

I am reminded why I don't race. Not sure I could handle any of my steeds going down like that (good lawd). You've got balls of steel, dude.

Glad you're okay .. I know it was insured, yes?
