This is on a new computer that has run fine* for the last month. It came with Vista. I haven't done ANYTHING as far as updates. It worked fine yesterday and now on start-up this morning - Boom.

*As fine as Vista can run. (read: nothing but problematic)

what model Lenovo is that? I've got a 3000 N100 a few months ago and I got that screen once too.

Time for a low level format and reinstall... XP Pro w/ SP2.

It's a 3000 J115.

Luckily it's not mine. This is one of the 8,701 reasons I own a Mac.

Just watched my friend's house for a week - her new computer has Vista - she is a network admin for the city so I would say she's got her stuff together - but she hasn't had much time to tweek it - and her two pre-teens have all sorts of junk on it - her start-up file is huge.

And the computer runs like a dog. Terrifically slow! Memory, etc seems pretty adequate - a 6o GB plus harddrive and it's been partitioned but BOY is it freaking slow!

My BFF, Jake tried to put Vista on his HP laptop. He described it as "true 4-bit colour in a 4-inch by 4-inch screen".

I'm not sure if I hate Vista or if I hate ACER. I bought a new computer a couple of months ago (Acer) and it is the biggest piece of crap I have ever owned. I'm just not sure who is at fault, acer or Vista. Sometimes it will take five minutes to open up a spread sheet!

*edit* Forgot to mention that it locks up every day or so as well. The smallest things make it freak out!

Is that Vista's version of the "blue screen of death".

That could be hardware, or an attack. "An attempt was made to write to read only memory" Now that is a messed up situation, the question is who messed it up...

I have been using Vista for a few months, and see it as a mixed bag. But it is getting better; and I am looking forward to DX10 games.

I'm running Vista on the desktop and it can be slow with all the visual apps running full time, but it's not as bad as you guys make it out to be.

If the teens are running a bunch of files then that's the problem right there. Vista isn't majick.

I've been thinking about going Ubuntu.

Do it! Then get XGL working and install Beryl, all the pretty stuff you could ever want. Expose like on a Mac, renders multiple workspaces on a sweet cube, and is generally really awesome and makes Aero look like the garbage it is. you can also get Mac OS X style dock bars (Kiba Dock for one).

...I'll stop now.

We ran a full test on the hardware and everything came up clean... It's not IBM's fault.

Somehow, the OS got fzucked while the power was OFF.

not really "hate" so much as... extreme dislike. They tried to promote it as this revolutionary awesome new feature, but similar things have been implemented on Macs and Beryl/Compiz for quite a while. And it's horribly inefficient.

I am just not a fan of Vista , the more I work with Microsoft products the more of a Linux/Open Source fan girl I become.

I just love how when something goes horribly wrong with Windows it reverts back to the blue or black screen and DOS text of the 80's. Just a friendly reminder that underneath all the pretty colors, fancy icons, and animated windows, all you really have is this.

Dipper, how you healing?

If I had known we were gonna post pics of our BSODs, I'd have taken a pic of the one I got this morning while surfing the Commuting forum. Instead of illegal accessing of memory, it was some lame variable not set right or something. And I'm running XP, not Vista and today was the first time I got the BSOD on this machine. Must be the summer solstice.

Ubuntu set up all of my laptop's fancy buttons and stuff automatically, and I'm used to it! Boo!), I wish my laptop didn't have crummy, low-end, barely supported, Porta-Radeon integrated video so I could try out this new fancy 3D stuff. I've seen the videos, and it's very gee-whiz whooshy and everything. It'd be fun to play with.

As for Vista, blech. I haven't even cared enough to seek out screenshots of the stupid thing. Last I saw of it, it had that huge, gaudy sidebar on the screen, and it was called... what was it, Blackcomb? Windows 2000 was the last version of Windows that was remotely usable, to me. The few times I've been unfortunate enough to use XP, I've wanted to strangle the life out of someone in retribution. Ugh.

As soon as we installed WinXP on our Mac using the Bootcamp software from Apple, we lost half our hard drive to the huge windows installation and the computer started running slow in both Windows and Mac sides. No coincidence here!!

They need to ship out a free service tech with every Acer! They are shipped pre-broken!:D

Tell me about it. I've been living the mac easy life at home for a good 3 years now, and make do with XP at work. About to join a MS-heavy director doing hardcore MS-exclusive work all the time. With Vista. And a whole wagon-load of other stuff.. time to get back in the game :(

The problem is Vista, otherwise known as ME MkII.
Try a Kubuntu or PCLinuxOS live CD, doesn't do anything to the system until you tell it. If it works for you, problem solved! If you're gonna stick with Redmond XP SP2 is about as good as it gets.

Here's a prediction, at the moment all the 3D stuff is mostly eye candy, there is some good stuff but its nothing you can live without.

But, someone is going to come up with an idea that everyone's gonna look at and say, " Damn! Now I have to go 3D!"

The prediction is that it won't be Redmond that does it, maybe Apple, but they are going to have to work hard to get there before the XGL, Beryl, AIGXL hackers.

It was brand new and kept locking up on him. He wasn't in windows mode at the time. It was nice but a Mac is a lot more money for a lot smaller video card. I play
video games, and computer purchases revolve around the video card for me.

Vista Sucks! My Gateway notebook would barely run with all the crap it had going on. I disabled that initial pop-up screen, that helped some, and I erased all the McAfee anti-viral/anti-everything crap, too. Installed Norton, which is still a hog, but overall the system is probably 4 times faster after doing these things.
