Northern California - What is the best way to ride from Auburn to Lake Tahoe?

Hello all, I am new to this forum so this is my first thread.

I was trying to come up with a nice way to ride from my home in Auburn (actually Lake of the Pines) to Lake Tahoe and I thought it would be cool to see how any of you have done it.

I'd say take the scenic route.... Hwy 49 North outta auburn, through Downieville, Sierra City, Bassetts (maybe with a detour up to Gold Lake area), turning south on 89 in sierraville to Truckee and then on to Tahoe City. By no means the shortest, or most direct route... but arguably the best !!!

Road or MTB?
It would have to be on the road. I ride a Specialized Allez Sport. I have it tricked out for commuting and touring so it is no light weight job, it has aerobars and a rack with a pannier. In the winter, I have a 5 pound battery pack and light. It is definately a work out.

Well then, I would guess 49 to 20 to Cisco Grove, then Old 40 from Cisco Grove over Donner Summit to Truckee, and then from there to Tahoe City on 89.
