Commuting - Axiom Panniers

I've searched the forums but can't find many reports on these bad boys:

Anyone here have positive or negative to say? They look a lot like Ortlieb Backrollers with a different mounting system.

I dunno if that's a good deal. For the same price (almost) I just bought these:

So far so good. They also seem to have more fore/aft adjustability. I have mine adjusted slightly back so my heels don't hit.

Is that a good deal?

I don't know, to be honest. But I'm trying to find a good affordable pair for my birthday and I haven't found anything that just says "yes" to me yet.

If you need simple and cheap bags, I bought my Axium Appalachian bag for under $30 on the web. It drapes over the rack (so you realy get 2 bags) and has bungy clips on the bottom inside of each side of the bag, and at the top there are velcro loops to keep it centered on the rack. For the money they are great. I've been using them 5 days a week on a 10 mile commute and they are holding up fine. I did spray them with some water proofing spray as I do with all my camping, shoes, coats, and other outdoor equipment. Last month I got caught in a torential down-poor. Everything in the bags stayed perfectly dry, my shoes ended up filling up with rain water wicking down from my socks, and took 4 days to dry... that was some serious rain! I grew up in Holland am used to simple robust bags that just drape. I don't take the bags off often so it is not an inconvenience. I park my bike inside the office so security is not an issue. If you need bags that come off easily then these are not for you. It doesn't take long to attach, but these would not be an elegant solution.

I have the Axiom Champlains and LaSalles which seem to use the same mounting attachments.

They are the old fashioned bungee and hook style, which I have no complaints. Also, the center "locking wedge" is a simple solution to keep the bags secured to the rack--never had a bag fall off after 1000's of miles of commuting/touring.

I do have a minor complaint with the back support. It is not very stiff, so the bottom pannier corner will eventually bend into the spokes, if you don't have a rack with extended side supports. You can easily DIY it by adding additional support inside the bag. Otherwise, a good value and decent quality.

fwiw +1 for the Appalachians...they're cheap and hold a lot (almost too much, I keep cramming stuff in there). Plus I like that besides the two big pockets there are two smaller ones. Honestly I never even secure them with the bungeys, just the velcro and have had no problems. No heel strike either.

I have an older set of Axiom Lasalle's (4 years old) and they're great! If anything ever happens to them, I'd have no problem at all going out and picking up a newer set of Lasalle's. They are the perfect size and have all the features I'd want in a pannier.

And they've taken me around the world on numerous tours. :)

I like axiom products. They are well priced and most offer a lifetime warranty. I have the kootenay pannier bags and have used them many times to pick up large amounts of groceries. I am very happy with them.

Yup, that's the only complaint I have with axioms. But like you said, a piece of templast solves that pretty quick.
