Now that I have a powertap I'm confused when reviewing data. Which one is better to use and what are they both anyways (ie. differences)?

Average power is exactly what it says. Your power over the ride, averaged.

Normalized power is the amount you would have put out had you pedaled constantly for the ride.


When you ride, your power jumps all over the place. This variability means that the overall average power for a ride is a poor assumption of the actual intensity of the effort. Normalized power is a more accurate way of showing the effort of your ride. Coggan developed this algorithm, along with intensity factor to quantify the actual physiological toll the ride took on your body.
