Bicycle Mechanics - Campy 8 speed...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I know it has been discussed before, that a Shimano 9sp cassette will actualy work fine with a Campy shifters and derailleurs, but what about 8speed. I know the spacing is slightly different.

No, Kev. Several years ago I wanted to install Campy Ergo shifters on my 8-speed Shimano equipped Santana tandem. I knew they were not compatible then, so I ended up installing Sachs Ergo shifters and a Sachs rear derailleur to make it work. Back then, as another option, spacers were available to re-space Shimano casettes to work with Campy Ergos.
OK, here we go. The spacings on Campagnolo 8, 9, and 10 cog cassettes, and the amount of throw(spacer thickness + cog thickness) in the lever/derailleur. spacer thickness = st, cog thickness = ct
8 spd(Campag, old Sachs) st=3.1mm, ct=1.9mm
8 spd(Shimano, SRAM) st=2.95mm, ct=1.8mm
9 spd(Campag) st=2.8mm, ct=1.75mm
9 spd(Shimano, SRAM) st=2.56mm, ct=1.78mm
10 spd(Campag) st=2.45mm, ct=1.7mm
Resourceful souls can and have sanded, on or between sanding or honing blocks, spacers to mix and match components(mark everything carefully!) So, for example, you could sand/hone Shimano 8 spd spacers down .15 mm and they would be a pretty good match with 9 spd Campag. levers, but...most people make this swap without sanding and don't worry too much about the very slight increase in drive train noise. THAT'S why they say they're interchangeable. In the laboratory(where some people ride), they are not.
I'm going to post a new thread on this because I think alot of people are curious about it.:)
I realized that Shimano Rear Derailleur would not work with Campy shifters.. I was just curious about the cassette itself. People use 9sp shimano Cassetts with Campy Rear Derailleur and shifters no problem and that is .14mm difference while the 8sp stuff is .15 difference.. I've also noticed a spacer kit to convert the shimano Cassette to campy spacing for about $20, quite a bit for some spacers.
Well when comparing cost, I recently purchased (3)12-21 Shimano 8 spd cassettes for $13. ea.. Even if I go ahead and purchase the spacer kit you're referring to, that's significantly less than say a Chorus or even Centaur cassette. And, if I have a 9 spd Campag lever/der. set and an 8 spd Shimano cassette, there is only .15mm diff in spacer thickness. Over 7 cogs that is 1mm of mis-alignment, but if set up properly(by centering with the rear derailluer adjusting barrel the derailleur jockey wheels on a cassette cog IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CASSETTE), this difference is not very noticeable at each extreme. :)
