As a Triple Bypass training ride, I'm going to be riding up to Echo Lake from Highlands Ranch on Sunday morning. I'll be going right through Chatfield Res. on the way, and if you want to join me, that's a great place to park/meet and fall in, or meet up in Evergreen ...

My route:
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/The-Ranch-to-Echo-Lake

Basically, Highlands Ranch to Chatfield Res. Up Deer Creek Canyon, then N. Turkey Creek to Evergreen, hwy 73 north to Bergen Park to head west on 103 to Echo Lake.

I'm planning on leaving the house *early* -- like 5:30-6am. That puts me at the intersection of Wadsworth and Deer Creek Canyon Rd around 6:30 ...

Wow... that's early. Sounds like a good ride, though...

No other takers? They're all chicken, I tell you! :p

Hrmm... I'll have to leave here about 5:30 to meet you at Wadsworth/Deer Creek Canyon.

Ok, count me in!

"I Can't Make It" (Sorry Nick)

I would if I could but I can't.

The brownies at the Echo Lake lodge are huge and yummy. Someone should have one in my name.

got room for a relatively new rider? What's the best route for me to meetup from Cap Hill?

superdex

heck's yeah we got room -- from Cap Hill I'd drive to Chatfield Res, unless you're really up for a monster day. But, you can head south on the Platte River Trail all the way to Chatfield Res. Someone confirm?

bmclaughlin807

Yes... Platte River trail south... right on the C-470 trail will take you along the north edge of Chatfield. There's some construction on the way, but they're SUPPOSED to have marked detours set up.

Or, if you're driving, take C-470 to Wadsworth... turn left (South) on Wadsworth. Sounds like the meetup is gonna be at the first intersection south of C-470.

You two gonna have cells??? I'll PM ya my cell phone number.

I'm sorry for dropping myself... I barely made it home I was so tired before work. Next time I'll be ready!

Thanks for meeting up with me though!

Jorpe, you got guads, kid. A flatlander who's ridden for just a few months tackling Deer Creek Canyon and North Turkey Creek deserves some kudos. (And you were smart for cutting it short). Thanks for joining us and I look forward to riding with you again--

B-mic --you're an animal. That's all I'm gonna say.

Wow I missed this one. :)

I did Morrison to Squaw on Saturday. 72 miles though.

Sounds like you all had a great time :)

Sounds like y'all had fun. Making me feel like a wuss. :p
I went up golden canyon road Saturday and fell apart like ...... don't know. I have not had a ride that short that was that difficult this year. The mapping program said that it was 5500 feet of climbing in 17 miles (do not know if that is true or not. It sure as heck was steep.)

Must remember to take a recovery day after 250 commuting miles before trying a climb. I am hoping to tide the triple bypass next year and now believe I have a heck of a lot of training to do. Might as well start training a year early. LOL

all I can say is the climb from Bergen Park to Echo Lake is 18mi of painful, never ending, annoyingly lengthy 5%. You think you're at the top like three or four times, then you round the bend and the road goes up again. Especially when you get to Echo Mountain ski resort, and you still have a couple miles after it to climb. It's going to be a painful 3hr start to the Triple Bypass, that's for sure...

Wonder why I found lookout easy and golden horrific. Must have been the ride partner (snowy vs me and myself).

I had the same experience on Friday. I normally can ride Golden Gate Canyon top to bottom w/o stopping. On Friday afternoon I had to stop 3 times to cool down. Plus, as I was meeting my family for a camping trip in the park, I got to continue the ride into the park on "Mountain Base Road" which has stretches of 19% grade. Yikes. Good training for the Triple!

Is it that crowded at the start that it will take 3 hours to go 18 miles? Just curious if that's what I should prepare for.

6mph, 18 mi. 3 hrs.

Snowy, you've been riding a lot more than I have. :p

My ride stats:

107.22 miles, 13,402.49 ft of climbing, 6hrs, 57 mins moving time, 15.4 mph moving average.

We started with a good long ride and lots of climbing before Bergen park and the climb up to Juniper Pass, so... yeah, we were going slow up. I don't think you'll have that much trouble with this pass at 7 AM on ride day... it'll be a lot cooler and you'll be fresh.

I hope I didn't come off as disparaging in my question and, if I did, I apologize. I was just trying to get an accurate picture of what to expect on ride day.

Well, I have a small confession, B-Mic -- I sagged out. I made a phone call after getting up and over 285, and got picked up (with BBQ dinner!) at Ken Caryl and C470. Yeah, I know I got all the hard parts of C470 out of the way, but I didn't want to be on the road any longer, and the climbing back to C's house from Chatfield Res woulda done me in real bad. Add in the headwinds, and I was d o n e done. An epic ride nonetheless, and I do have pics I'll post up when I get home tonight....

My stats looked like this:
97mi, 8:13 ride time (how is our ride times so far off?)

Expect a lot of climbing ;)

(sorry, couldn't help it) -- it's my first TBP, so I don't know how crowded it will be. The ride is capped at 3500? riders, and 103 will be closed to other cyclists for us, so I think you'll be okay... it's just a long long long grind to start the day....

I always think the same thing, I think its becuase Lookout is only ~4 miles while GG just drags on and on and does have some steeper sections where Lookout nevers really kicks up that hard.
