Mountain Biking - Rotor selection...

Okay... what's the difference between say an Avid rotor, and an aftermarket company's 6" rotor? I've got one badly scarred rotor on my Jekyll which is affecting the braking, and one warped one on my F900 that squeaks but doesn't affect performance at all. So I'm looking at some rotors on pricepoint. The Avid brand rotors are like 40 bucks, and I don't really want to spend 80 bucks on 2 rotors. So is there any difference between rotors? And why are Avid's so damn expensive? Are they all the same, or are there differences or something?

Are you talking about differences between avid, hayes, shimano......or is there an off brand company that makes the same rotor as avid?

Well I just went and looked and fount the "delta aztec" rotor....call up or email pricepoint on what brake those would work best for. You could always buy organic or metallic pads....whatever the avids dont use normally.

Well... almost all of the 6 inch rotors are compatible with the Avid brake. I just want the same performance, that's all.

Difference will be disc thickness. That would be my concern. I 'think' avid discs are thicker than average which means you should be able to run most discs. I would simple measure the thickness of your current disc to check and then bring a caliper with you. The only other thing is disc material. People have been experimenting with disc strenght vs stopping power vs weight for a while. I would contact the company that creates the aftermarket disc and see which focus their disc is suppost to go for. I would definately consider buying aftermarket but I would definately be looking at it as an experiment and hope for the best. :)

That's the thing.. I can get two generic aftermarket ones for the price of ONE made by Avid. I'm pretty sure they're at least close to the same thickness, and if not, I can always dial in the pads a bit to compensate. You guys think I should do an experiment for the bike forums and order a couple and find out for myself? :D

Only 100$ EACH!!!...haha...I can find aftermarket ones that look like saw blades for 40$ for the pair and I know they are good :)...

Jim I would go ahead with the experiment if I needed rotors or was upgrading.

I bought one of the Aztec rotors over a month ago. Works fine with my Avids. A little thicker than Avid's and Hayes' rotors. Probably a little heavier too, but who cares?
