Hello everyone, my name is Jon and I just got a mid-70s Schwinn Collegiate 5-speed to commute to work and campus (I'm a college student). I'm fairly new to the whole commuting by bike thing, as in the past I've just relied on the bus system. It's definitely a learning experience since I've never really worked on bikes that much before this year, and I've never had a friction shifting bike before.

I'm also working on restoring an old Worksman Cycles tandem that is a similar vintage to my Schwinn. Right now it is just a pile of pieces, but some day it will come together.

I'm sure I will have some questions from time to time, but until then, I just thought I'd say hello and start doing some reading...

Hello Jon, let's see photos of the Schwinn in the Classic & Vintage forum, please! Also, many of us have a fascination with Worksman Cycles (I see them in use at my work place), but I don't think I've ever seen one which was a tandem.

Don't forget the regional forums--you would want to look at the Great Lakes region.

Welcome to BF!

Hi Jon, from a former 'Burger. Welcome to the forums! Since your in Pittsburgh, and learning to work on bikes you might want to give Free Ride Pittsburgh (http://www.freeridepgh.org/html/learn.html) a look into. Also, don't miss The Pittsburgh Bikefest (http://www.bike-pgh.org/events/bikefest) which starts next Friday June 29th.

Thanks for the welcome guys! I will post pictures of both once I can get a chance to.

I've looked at Free Ride before, and I'll try to get to some of the Bikefest stuff - I didn't even know that was going on until I saw your links.
