Foo - brave critters

Sitting outside with my laptop right now. Heard some rustling by my feet, a young raccoon! Startled me at first. There is a vacuum cleaner bag sitting here, that I brought out to dump out on a garbage bag later, too look for small bolt I need that I accidentally vacuumed up. The raccoon was interested in it.

Had a little tug of war with the raccoon to get the bag away from it :lol: it must have smelled some food crumbs or something, that I vacuumed off the kitchen floor. Thing was fearless! Though, it made a whining sound that reminded me of a little of baby when I took the bag away, really weird. I expected it to hiss.

I suppose there was some risk it might have bit me, but rabies is pretty rare so I wasn't too worried about it. Didn't want it to make a mess tearing apart the bag. It wandered off afterwards.

I'm not mean, it might have gotten sick eating that stuff! :)

Oh sure, justify it to yourself however you want, you just didn't feel like sharing. :p

Well hey, if I run out of food, I could blow the dust off of the stale cheerios that are in the bag :)

Seriously tho, I almost went into the house to pour a bowl of milk for it, in case it came back, then thought better of it, probably not a good idea to encourage it to hang around.

Racoons do not give up so easily. He isn't done. That bad boy's gonna find a way to open a window one night, sneak into your house, and have at it with that bag. Trust me. :D

Well he didn't get into the house last night, so far as I can tell anyway. Unless he is really sneaky, and covered his tracks :eek:

Yeah, I don't know how to speak racoonish tho, to ask whether or not it wanted its steak bloody, medium, or well burnt :) or what kind of dressing to put on the salad.

Raccoons are quite fond of cat food. I knew one who used to come into my neighbors house and eat the cat's food. He was a very nice, fat, raccoon.

Yeah, I used to have a pet-door near the kitchen where the dog & cat-food bowls were located. One night, I heard some rustling noises and went to the kitchen and flipped on the light. There was a medium-sized raccoon dumping out the cat-food bowl onto the floor. He looked up at me with an expression like, "Hey, I'm eating here, turn out the light." and went right back to eating the food! I opened the sliding glass door and herded him out with a broom. Moved the pet-door to the other side of the house after that. :)

You can never go wrong with medium rare & ranch dressing. :lol:

I was backpacking at Point Reyes National Seashore a few years ago, and spent a night at a at a remote campsite 12 miles from any roads. I noticed a lot of raccoons in the area, so I told everyone to have their food eaten and everything cleaned up by dark. Raccoons can be very aggressive.One knucklehead didn't listen. The raccoons came in and took his food away from him. He came very close to being attacked. Every seen a raccoon's set of teeth close up? You don't argue with 10 30+ pound aggressive raccoons. 12 miles in, and people apparently had been feeding them to get them to lose the fear of humans. Bad idea to feed them.

When I through hiked the Appalachian Trail, I had no problems with any animals other than raccoons. They travel in packs and have committees, symposiums, and think tanks dedicated to getting to your food.

Yeah, possums are harmless. Their body-temperature is actually too low to carry rabies. :)

I rescued a baby possum out of a garbage can one time in a park. He must of climbed onto the bench next to the can and then jumped in. Unluckily for him the can was almost empty...he didnt have enough height to get back out. Grabbed hm by the tail and let him go quickly.

He was only the size of a softball maybe. I should've brought him home with me.

We have not one, but two FAMILIES of raccoons camping out in the barn that I ride horses at--they've been there for a few months now. The babies are cute (supposedly... I've only seen the adults), but those things can be MEAN. And they scare the cats away. :lol:
